‘Spirit Horse Pass’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

The image above, is my latest completed watercolor Spirit Horse Pass.
There was a lot of unexplained things going on, while I was creating this painting.

As many of you know, I had gone out West during the Summer of 2011. While I was in Arizona, I did as much site seeing and photograph taking as I could. What entranced me most about the place was the outcropping of rocks.

Those rocks held magical shapes and Spirits for me. I could see shapes of hands, some looked like mittens others like bare hands reaching up out of the earth, reaching to be free of their stone encasement. Other shapes took on the look of Tribes, mothers carrying children, wearing drapes of blankets and clothing over their heads, all marching towards the horizon. I felt as if I was walking on sacred ground, and the past of the West was all around me. There is so much History there, and for me, the stones, boulders and rocks were telling me a loud story.

Several weeks ago, I was flipping through my images of riders and horses, and also going through my Arizona trip photos. There was those rocks, and I knew I had to start using them in backgrounds of my paintings.
The boulders in this painting, Spirit Horse Pass, are those of Prescott, Arizona. I had gone to visit the Phippen Museum of Western Art. As I arrived a little early, before they opened, I set off on a landscape adventure. And there was those rocks with the hands and mittens.

Here at the studio, I found the image I wanted from my files, and sketched out the rock's shapes for this painting. I transferred them onto the watercolor paper, along with the rider and horse, reference photo taken at a local horse show. I didn't have a lot of planned out things for this painting, as I got the image transferred and ready to paint. This rider and horse are the same team I had used in the watercolor Moon shine run.

As I started to lay down color onto the front of the horse, I could visualize an Appaloosa. I grew up with Appys and the love and bond I had with them came forward.
So, I had my horse color, and as I painted the horse, the hand print on the shoulder showed up. Wow, I thought, and I continued on that theme.
Then I thought, I would like to keep the background the same colors as the horse and stay along that 'spot' theme. I thought "snow". So I proceeded to lay in rock color here and there, leaving the paper white, where the snow would be. I worked it all, so it would have a pleasing flow.

When a good amount of rocks and snow was built up, I stepped back and took a look at how it was coming along, over all. Wow! What did I see?! I saw horse head shapes emerging from the rocks and snow. Some looked like race horses with blinkers on, others looked like horse head skulls, others were partial face, nose, arched necks and so on. I was totally amazed and dumb founded at what was happening with this painting! Believe me, none of this was planned.

As I kept working on the rocks, I just painted and let my subconscious take over. I didn't want to "try" to paint horse shapes, I just let "what will be, will be". And sure enough, there was more Horses in the rocks. I then had my title for this painting, Spirit Horse Pass. This painting came from a place that I cannot explain. It was not planned, it was not foreseen.

The rocks and landscape spoke to me, out there in Arizona, and are still speaking to me, through my art.
Pretty darn cool, if you ask me.

So, take a look, and see how many horse heads and pieces you can find, in the rocks and snow. I found around 20. There is no right answer, it's all in what you, as an individual, are open to seeing.

Appaloosa, Cowboy and Snow on the Rocks. Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood.

I’ve got a new Watercolor in progress. This is an Appaloosa being ridden through some canyon rocks covered in snow, that has melted and re-froze.

I wanted to keep the same theme of the horse color with the background and this is what came about. Sometimes I have a background planned out, but once I get painting, something else takes over and so I just follow my brush and get lost in the process of creating. I don’t try to be the Boss of my creations and tell them what to do. Things go wrong with the painting when I do that.

The background rocks are from a bunch of rocks that I photographed in Prescott, Arizona. I loved the shapes of them and they work well for this background.

Moreno Valley Arts Council Membership and Winter Exhibit, Watercolors Accepted by Debbie Flood.

Last week I was invited to become a member of the Moreno Valley Arts Council in Angel Fire, New Mexico. I graciously accepted and then I was told I was eligible to enter the Juried Competition of the Winter Exhibit.

COOL! I entered three Watercolors into this exhibit and I’m pleased to announce that all three were accepted!

Moon shine run 20 x 16 Watercolor

The photo is tinted a little too much on the pink and yellows! But the painting looks fabulous in this frame package.

‘Double trouble’ Hereford Calves and a Cowboy in Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I finished Double trouble today. 16 x 20 inches on 300 lb Arches Watercolor paper. $1,400.00

I found a good solution to all that sage brush in the background. I created shadow from the mountain onto the top of the brush back there, which sent it further back there and hazed from the morning mist and cool air. To better push this feeling home, I created breath coming from the animals and cowboy, to show the coolness of the morning.

I got up early that morning, to go photographing in Taos, NM. The air was cool and crisp. I loved it! But by the time I was photographing thee cute Herefords, it was very hot, and the sun was baking down. I love remembering what that cool morning was like, so I recreated that time of day.

Update progress on the watercolor ‘Double trouble’ Calves & Cowboy by Debbie Flood

Here is today’s work on the Double trouble watercolor.

Today, I realized just how much sage brush is in this painting! Ha ha. It stretches all the way to the top of the painting. But, I think I will improvise just a little, and put those pretty New Mexico Mountains back there.

There are effects in that sage, that I can’t really get with a brush alone. So I have implemented a couple Watercolor pencils to give a dotted-sparkle effect in the bushes. Once I rough that in, I go over it some with a wet brush, to soften a few edges. So far, it has given a really nice effect.

Today I was featured on another artists blog. Mary Hone calls it Artsy Fartsy Tuesday. It’s a really cute little blog, and fun! And of course she is a very talented artist herself! Desert Raven Art.

‘Double trouble’ Hereford Calves and a Cowboy on Horse Back, Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood.

Yes, I’ve started another one! ha ha. I like having a lot of paintings going on at once. Many times, the paper needs to dry, so while waiting for that, I can work on another one. Also, I get such a high from painting (No, not from paint fumes, but the pure joy of creating art) that when one is completed, it’s a bit of a let down, for it to be over. With another one still in progress, I don’t have that let down feeling. I simply move on to the next one. I guess you could say I am addicted to painting. Guess there are worse things to have an addiction over, huh?

Aren’t these little Hereford calves cute?? I photographed them in Taos, NM. They were peeking in and out of the gorgeous sage brush. The colors sent my senses on an explosion! I tell ya, I have so so many images from my trips that I want to paint. It was a “painting subject matter” over load!

The horse and rider in this painting, is from an image I took here in Maine. Gathering those ‘cowboy’ images around here in my local areas, are great for sticking into paintings like this. They help to play out a story in the painting.

This watercolor is 16 x 20 inches on 300lb Arches Watercolor Paper. I’ve lovingly titled it Double trouble.

New Watercolors in Progress, Pistols, Calves, and a Roping Cowgirl! by Debbie Flood

Well, the year is winding down, but I sure am not! I’m getting ready to ring in a fantastic 2012!

My commissions of 2011 are all finished, 2 have been shipped off and have arrived at their destination. The 3rd painting is packed up, and will ship out to New Mexico the 1st week of January 2012.

What’s on my studio watercolor table???

It’s a watercolor of a Pistol, Cowboy Hat, Holster, and an old black and white photo of a cowboy and horse. The pistol is a family member (so to speak, ha ha) and I was given some great reference images of it. The hat is from some of my own photos I have taken, and the barn board walls are from my memory of what the old boards look like. The old photo, is thrown in for some story telling nostalgia. Notice the coffee ring stain on the corner of the photo?

Now, Onto some others that are works in progress:

This watercolor (above) is Learnin` the ropes. I took the reference image for this painting in Sedona, Arizona. I went there, with a couple other artists for a day of horse back riding, eating some awesome cowboy breakfast, and learnin` to rope! I was surprised at how stiff the roping rope is. One definitely needs gloves when working seriously with this rope.

Most of the progress on this painting was done on the right side of the painting, back there in the mountains and distant landscape.

Another work in Progress is this very fresh new start:

This is the bare bones of this painting. I have sketches, two different ones, that I am moving around and working with to create a pleasing composition. The calves, are Hereford. Pretty red and white calves, nestled in the sage brush. I took reference photos of them, while I was in Taos, NM. The horse is from a photo I took here in Maine, back in 2010. A great example of East meets West! I’m looking forward to this painting, with the complimentary colors of sage brush and the reds of the animals.

And, some other works that are still on my table, waiting for my attention:

This is a fun watercolor, with running and jumping wild horses, and the cowgirl can sit and watch in delight. In her mind, she’s got the best life, and this is how she enjoys her down time.

‘Riders of the Storm’ Buckskin Horse and Cowgirl, beat the storm, Watercolor by Debbie Flood

This Watercolor is still in Progress. Riders of the storm is 14 x 19 inches and very detailed!

It features those gorgeous canyons of Sedona, Arizona, and the large bird of prey shadow that flickers over the landscape. A lightning strike in the distant dark clouds creates a feeling of urgency to get home or under cover. While out in Arizona, I saw these dark thunder heads move in fast around the canyon walls and Red Rocks. It gets very intense.

'Investigators' Wild Burros featured on Painting a Mustang a Day Challeng Blog

I finished the Watercolor Investigators. This painting is 12 x 16 and depicts two burros who are 'Knoxville' and 'Hood'. This painting was created for another blog, that I was asked to be a guest artist on. The blog is Mustang Challenge A Day by Linda L. Martin.

Three Commission works by Debbie Flood

Well, this watercolor just didn’t work out right. The face had too much detail to it, and the client wanted something more obscure and fantasy like, even though still having that ‘essence’ of the girl and horse that it is of.

So, with much discussion, and then some silent thought on my part for a few hours, it hit me! The girl and the horse are too close to the viewer.

Most of my paintings have the subject matter in the middle ground, not the foreground! WOW…I thought! So I pushed the rider and horse back into the landscape more. This is the sketch that has been approved, and I have already gotten it transferred to the watercolor paper and have applied a little bit of paint. The sketch is below here:

Then just recently, like this past weekend, I had a Facebook fan page, fan, commission me to do a Graphite painting of him and his Paso Fino Mare.

Love this image of them! The photo he sent me, is of their full bodies. After a little bit of discussion, we decided to crop in close to them, for a more intimate feel.

He also asked that I change the hat he had on, in the photo, to a cowboy hat. FUN!

It’s been a very busy few weeks here in the studio.

Not only with commission work, but with getting ready for exhibit entries, and hitting deadlines for interviews, and guest artist stuff on other Blogs. And painting new work for the 2012 exhibits.

‘Moon shine run’ Cowboy & black horse race through the Canyon Desert, watercolor by Debbie Flood

It was brought to my attention today, how I haven’t posted anything since November 30th! Wow, I’m so sorry to leave you all hanging!

So much work in the studio going on. I think what I’ll do is break down each work of art into it’s own blog post. That way, it will archive and be easy to find later down the road.

I finished Moon shine run. 20 x 16 watercolor on Arches 300lb watercolor paper.

Man, this is one exciting painting! The moon is full, and hey, didn’t we just have one of those this past weekend??. The only light this couple have as they thunder down through the canyon walls, zig zagging in and out and around cactus is the light of the Moon.

I am making Prints of this painting too! This week, I’ll be taking it to the Photographer and a Print run, limited to 50, will be offered. Print #1 is already spoken for. 20 x 16 $100.00 plus shipping.

My next post will be about my commissions of late.

Wild Burros, & Young Lady Riding Bare Back through the Western Landscape, works in progress by Debbie Flood

Oh my gosh…how cute are these Burros? I was asked to be a guest Artist on another Artist’s Blog for December. She does a Wild Horse and Burro painting a day, challenge. The week/day that I will be doing, is about the Wild Burro. I’ll post links to the blog article, when it goes live.

I had some “okay” images of Burros, but I have this friend and collector of my work that is a Wild Horse and Wild Burro Advocate, out in California. I contacted her, and she was so helpful in sending through some of her Burro images. Meet Knoxville and Hood. How cute are those names for Burros??!

I really am having a lot of fun painting this watercolor. The landscape reminds me of my trip to Arizona this past Summer. I love painting that landscape! The colors and the rocks. I’m a bit of a rock freak, I guess. I’ve always loved painting them. This painting is 12 x 16 inches on 300lb Arches Cold Press Paper.

Now, onto the more demanding painting in the studio at the moment:

This is a commission piece, from the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in New Mexico. The work is from a very old photo, probably 1970’s era. I had to create the eye of the horse, as it is a black horse, and that eye was in shadow, so the whole thing was too dark to be found.

This was going through some ugly stages, but I am working through them and it’s all starting to come together now. It is painted on a watercolor board, not the Arches Paper. So I’m getting re-acquainted with the board again. This painting is 12 x 10 inches.

That’s what is happening this week in the Studio. And the thought of Christmas is looming over my head! I have my Studio Christmas Cards ready, they just need to be made out and addressed….and sent!

“The Climb” Wins the ‘President’s Award’ International Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas

The Studio of Debbie Flood is very proud to announce that the Watercolor Painting The climb has won the President’s Award at the International Museum of Art, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011 in El Paso, Texas.

The Sun Bowl Exhibit is an Annual International juried competition, this year juried by Tim Gallegly, Nationally known artist.

This is the second year that Debbie has had work accepted in this prestigious Museum Exhibit and Sale.

The Sun Bowl is the Southwest's longest running art exhibit. Originally dubbed the Sun Carnival Art Exhibit at its inception in 1949, the International Museum of Art continues the long El Paso tradition of the integration of artistic and athletic excellence.

Each year, the International Museum of Art sponsors the Sun Bowl Art Exhibit, a juried competition featuring the top artists from all over the country. The exhibit is held in conjunction with the Sun Bowl festivities, and typically runs from November to December. Check our calendar for exact dates.

Since the International Museum of Art is along the Sun Bowl Parade route and houses the Sun Bowl sponsor parade viewing party, this exhibit provides an opportunity for all involved in the Sun Bowl festivities to see this yearly show.

This year the Exhibit runs November 5 – December 31, 2011

While the Sun Bowl Art Exhibit is on display, the public is welcome to come and view the works at this, the Southwest’s largest juried art exhibit. All items on display in the exhibit are available for purchase and selected items are also available in our online store.

More Progress on the Black Horse and Cowboy on the run “Moon shine run” Watercolor by Debbie Flood

The lower photo shows the progress from Sunday and Monday.

The top photo shows today’s progress. Today I worked on the rider’s face. Strangely enough, he came out looking like Kenny Rodgers, or Santa Clause! ha ha…pick one! I would rather not think of Santa Clause going after Moon-Shine…ha ha, so I shall pick it to be Kenny Rodgers. I mean, after all, he did play the Gambler, and sang a few of those ‘tough’ songs.

Other areas I worked on were the rider’s jacket, and down the left leg and stirrup. I am having such fun with this painting!

Today, I went and took care of my Print Proofs at the printer’s. Three new paintings are ready for print orders. The proofs look wonderful! We are all set to start the Limited Edition Run of 50 and also, I am introducing Original Hand Painted Prints! These Prints are 100% Archival, printed on Arches Velvet Watercolor Paper. A nice heavy paper too. I hand paint with my watercolors into the print. It creates a nice rich glow, that cannot be achieved by printing alone. These prints are a little more expensive to purchase, but so worth it! They come with a Certificate of Authenticity, so you know you are getting a genuine Debbie Flood Original Hand Painted Print. ‘Moon Shine Run’, Black horse, Cowboy, Full Tilt through the Canyon Desert at Night! In Progress By Debbie Flood

How exciting! Riding full tilt through a Canyon Desert at night! Nothing but the light of Moon illuminating the way!

I’ve been wanting to paint a Moon light scene for a few months now. I just never seemed to have the right composition or story for the night scene. Then the other evening, I was browsing through my photos, I had taken at various horse events here in Maine, and found this man and horse, full gallop! I thought about the rocks I had seen when I was in Arizona, and how they jutted up out of the ground and reached for the sky. I thought about the cactus, and prickly pear, that grew there, and decided to put this pair in that scene. As I got it sketched out, I realized, that it would be even more exciting, to have them full tilt at night! And the play on words for a title came to mind Moon shine run. This Watercolor Painting is 20 x 16 inches on 300lb Arches Cold Press Paper.

I’m having a lot of fun with this one. It seems to be really stretching my brain! The angles, the shadows, and the light that is absent of warmth. The Moon is behind them, so there is the outline of moonshine on their outer edges.

This painting will be taking a lot of layers to get the colors toned down and give the atmosphere of night.

“Canyon Shadows” and “Minor Adjustments” Western Art Watercolors by Debbie Flood

I finished two watercolors, since I last posted.

This one is Canyon shadows, 16 x 16 inches square on 300lb Arches Watercolor Paper.

During my trips out West, I saw a lot of different rock formations, and the shadows became spirits of the west, to me. Large birds of prey would fly over-head and their shadows would flicker across the ground, rocks, and on me. When I started this painting, I didn’t have a thought about those shadows, until I got a little more into the painting, and I realized what was spooking the horse and making the young Cowgirl look quickly. This shadow of the Eagle coasts across the canyon and soars up across the horse and rider. I could have worked up more detail in the background and brought you along on my exact journey, but because I see so many different things in this painting, I decided to stop here, and let you ‘see’ what might be there, for spirits, feelings, and shapes. Enjoy.

It’s amazing how time keeps on marching. Here we are in November. And I am Thankful.

The Summer was amazing, with the Gallery Openings, Invites, Awards, Trips out West, new friends I have gained, and others that have fallen away. Looking back, I can’t really say the friends who have fallen away, were really friends to begin with. I can now see they were more “along for the ride, acquaintances”, until it didn’t suit them anymore. Many sayings of success come to mind, that I never really understood before, such as:

Lonely at the top (though I’m really not lonely, or at the top, I understand that statement better)

Climb that ladder: (Seems to be about who is waiting to step on your fingers, as you reach for that next rung).

Quality is better than Quantity: (Social Circles aren’t all that ends all. There is so much more quality in a few very close friends, and I am proud to say I have a few of those). This can also pertain to the amount of work that is created and pounded out each day. I have slowed down in the production of my work, but only a tiny bit, and I am paying more attention to getting a work of art right and making it something beautiful, that tells my story.

It seems that people in general ( I find this to be true with a lot of other artists) who have followed my career, whether in my community, or online,have a certain mind set about me. I realized this a few days ago. I was questioned and called upon, and given an Art History Lesson, publicly online, because I asked another artist about their materials and how that artist used those materials. The artist that lite into me, wasn’t the artist I was speaking with, whom created the gorgeous piece of art. I didn’t understand why I was being publicly brow beaten, because this person thought I should already “know” about the mediums used, and how they were applied. It seemed I was expected to “Know it all” already. Well, I don’t know it all. And I don’t ever plan on learning it all, and I will never stop learning. How do we grow as artists and human beings, if we stop learning and asking questions? To presume you know someone to be a certain way with certain knowledge just isn’t fair. But I guess some people want to place others on a pedestal, only to feel let down later on, because the pedestal person didn’t live up to the expectations.

I understand better now, why many artists that are very well known and at the top of their game, do not “do” online social sites. We artists are very sensitive souls, and any little negative, jealous, envious, deviant human being might throw us off our creative psych.

Since I’ve had several of these encounters within the last month or two, it’s time for me to pull back a bit, from the online social networks. I’ll still be posting my works for all of you, who enjoy, collect and share my work, here on the Blogs, and my Facebook Page, and the Google+ page, I am going to be more cautious about the ‘Artists’ that come into my online life. There is no room for jealous, green eyed people, who need to go to their studios and create works of art that can express who they are, and the journey they are on, to be in my life.

Everyone has the power within themselves, to be all that they can be. If only they would stop looking at what others have or don’t have, know or don’t know, and concentrate on making your own life worth living. It’s time to stop studying and picking other’s apart, and time to start creating. Life is just too short for this kind of messiness. Why waste your 100 years on that? And what if you don’t have 100 years? What if your days ended tomorrow? Would you feel good about what you have done with your life? And how you have treated others? Will you be proud of what you are leaving behind?

I for one, will be immersing myself, more than ever, into my creative journey, called Art.

~And what a journey it has been so far. Yes, I am very Thankful.

Tell me it’s ok. Western Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

Here is the progress on Tell me it’s ok 14.5 x 11 Watercolor on 300 lb Arches Watercolor paper.

This is coming along so well. As I add more shadows, the glow starts to happen. I’ll be working more on the background, ground and field areas, and the saddle. Then there is finishing off the reins, and the bridle. I’ll probably work up the lower half of the jeans too.

It takes many glazes of color to get the right depth, of rich color and shadows. Each glaze has to wait for the paper to dry, before washing another over it.

I’m taking pre-orders for Professional Limited Edition Prints of 50.

Watercolor Progress on Western Horse and Cowgirl “Tell me it’s ok” by Debbie Flood

See….I have been working! This is a new watercolor that I started last week, I think. I get painting and the weeks all mesh together and time flies and I lose track of where I am on the calendar!

The title of this one is Tell me it’s ok. Watercolor on Arches 300lb paper.

The photo at the top of this post is where I have left off, on the progress for today. And I’ll be back at it tomorrow. I ‘m having trouble pulling my eyes away from this one. I love the colors, the composition and the story. The whole package! I took the reference photo here in Maine, at a horse show, and placed them in the New Mexico Landscape. This young lady was working with this horse, and taking him through the trail class, getting used to scary things, such as tarps and orange cones, that could jump up and eat him! I loved the communication that was going on between the two of them. So much trust was being learned that day.

International Museum of Art of El Paso, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011 by Debbie Flood

I’m very pleased to announce that three of my watercolors were accepted into the International Museum of Art of El Paso, Sun Bowl Exhibit 2011. El Paso Texas. November 4 ~ December 31, 2011.

This is a mile stone for me! Why ?, you ask? , I have entered this exhibit in the past, (Artists are allowed to enter three works to be juried by a Museum Committee) and I’ve only been able to get one out of the three accepted. This year, all three were accepted! That’s huge for me!

The end of June, 2011, I was in Angel Fire New Mexico, riding a great horse through the National Forests and Mountains of Angel Fire and over looking Eagle Nest Lake. What a gorgeous day that was. Filled with magic for me. Something like a Cinderella Story. The Prince of the story was the place, horses and Gallery Exhibit for me.

This painting isn’t the horse that I rode, but it is one that was at the Ranch that day. Gorgeous white-gray Quarter Horse. The wind was blowing up dust devils and this horse was on the watch and listening for something in the wind.

‘Angels walk among us’ Southwestern Woman and Horses Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Isn’t that the truth! Angels walking among us. It’s funny how I wasn’t able to think of a title until this painting was completed. Sometimes things happen like that. But this woman is so graceful in her life, that when I thought of her, that’s what I thought of. And with the horses in the background, to me they are angels too. Horses have saved so many people, from so many things.

I have signed this painting, but I still may tweak a few little things before sticking the “Done” label on it.

September 30th, More Progress on the New Mexico Lady in the Arizona Desert, watercolor by Debbie Flood

It’s slow going now, but I am working on this latest painting of the New Mexico lady in the Arizona Landscape.

The more I work on this, the more I love it. Today I worked on the Cactus in the foreground. It seems like it is slow going, because I have to be patient with it, and wait for paper and paint to dry, before layering and glazing another color over the same area.

Her hair has come out so soft looking. One color I never thought would work, but took a risk with, was Indian Red. I got to thinking about all the colors around her, and what colors might be bouncing onto and off of her hair. So over the darks in her hair, and places I had lifted color out, I glazed the Indian Red over it all. WOW! What a great move that was! Can you tell I am very pleased with it?

This painting is almost square, at 22 x 19 Inches. And painted on 300lb Arches Watercolor painting.

Want to know what I do, when I’m waiting for paint and paper to dry????

I start another painting! This is a small section of a larger painting. I started on the Cowgirl boots first. I just loved them when I saw them! I think you’ll be liking this painting a lot too. The subject matter is going to be very fun!

New Mexico Lady and Arizona Scenery, A Watercolor in progress by Debbie Flood

As of late, I am working on this gorgeous Watercolor of a New Mexico Lady and the Arizona Landscape. I’m joining up my two trips to these States this Summer, into this one painting.

This woman had attended my Gallery opening in Angel Fire New Mexico, back in June. She wore this gorgeous dress and she herself was so elegant. I knew I would be painting her, once I got back home for the Fall and Winter.

Here I have 4 images showing up close detailed areas of the painting, as it progressed. The last image shows the whole painting, which is 19 x 22 inches. Arches 300lb Watercolor paper.

I’ll be layering and glazing more color over this painting, mostly in the background. I have to stop and wait for layers of paint and paper to dry.

35th International Bank Exhibit, Raton, New Mexico September 21-23, 2011

I am so very pleased to announce that I was “Invited” to send works, of my choosing, to the 35th International Bank Exhibit in Raton, New Mexico.

Back in June, during my Gallery Opening debut in Angel Fire, New Mexico, at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery, I was contacted by the Director of the International Bank Exhibit of Raton, New Mexico, Ray Wolf. What a surprise that was! The jury process for this exhibit was being waived, as my work had already been seen, and I was being recommended to exhibit there. WOW!

Three works of my choosing. Hmmm…what would I send???

In August I had a trip to Sedona, Arizona with works in the group Invitational Exhibit, ‘Lamingtons and Apple Pie’. What a week that was! Another big ‘WOW’. Because of this exhibit, I couldn’t yet decide which paintings would go to the Raton Bank Exhibit.

Once home, and the works that were slated to return home from the Sedona exhibit were home, I picked out the three works I would send to Raton.

Here are the works that have just arrived there, today. The exhibit takes place September 21-23, 2011.

Mustang and the Arizona Landscape Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

I have finished the painting of the Adobe building with the blue doors. I haven’t taken a final photo of it yet. That is right up there on my to do list, and I will get it posted, soon.

This Watercolor, pictured above, is a new work in progress I started a couple of days ago.

I’ve had this image of the Paint horse, that I took photos of this past Spring. He was up on a hill, here in Maine. After traveling to Arizona recently, and specifically to Sedona with all their red rocks and dirt, I decided to put this horse in the Sedona setting, up on a hill.

I’m enjoying painting the red dirt and rocks there, as I get to use all my favorite colors!

I’m looking forward to the long, Labor Day, Weekend. My boys went back to school this week, and we have been getting up early for that middle school-high school bus! We were all so used to our lazy days of Summer. Even the dog is tired!

Tomorrow we plan a trip to a State Fair. The last big hoopla before we officially say goodbye to Summer.

A Peek Into Culture Watercolor in progress of a Taos New Mexico Adobe by Debbie Flood

While I was in New Mexico, back in June of 2011, I was visiting the Taos Church with CheyAnne. This particular Adobe building was next door to the Church. CheyAnne exclaimed a soft “Oooooo…..the door is open here, look at the things inside!” She proceeded to snap away with her camera…and I soon followed suit. I loved the blue doors. Especially with one invitingly swung open. Then there was the Hot Peppers drying on the outside wall. And as I peeked inside, there was a sculpted human figure and glimpses of plants and pots.

Everything about this scene, screamed to me, to be painted. To share with you what the two of us saw, and what I saw and what struck a chord with me.

This watercolor painting, titled A peek into culture, is still in progress, but almost completed. The doors need more work as well as the weathered wood beams above the doors.

The size is 14 x 11 on Arches 300lb Watercolor Paper.

Now that I am back from Sedona, Arizona, where I gathered more images of the Southwest lifestyle, I have more painting projects than I can ever live long enough to paint! My mission is to try! We shall see what comes from so much travel and observations from one Summer.

The Taos, NM Church Watercolor Painting is finally finished.

I’ve returned from Sedona, Arizona and the Invitational Group Exhibit Lamingtons And Apple Pie at the Sedona Arts Center. I have to say, the work in that exhibit was wonderful!

The Red Rocks of Sedona was anything but amazing! Very gorgeous and inspirational Landscape there. As you have probably guessed, I took more than a lot of photographs.

I also took a day to visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. That sure is one big hole in the ground! ha ha….and quite spectacular.

Half a day was spent on a horse back ride through some of the Arizona desert, where Jack Rabbits and Cotton Tail rabbits seemed to watch us plod along. That ride was followed by a wagon ride, pulled by two beautiful black Percherons, up to the cook shack, where we were fed an awesome Breakfast of Cowboy eggs, sausage gravy, and home made biscuits that were cooked in a coal pit! Our view was filled with an over look of the Country that laid around us. And the Moon that we all share, was watching over us, in the morning sky.

Another day, I took a drive to Prescott, home of the Phippen Western Art Museum. I was nothing but inspired by that Museum and ready to paint, after viewing the amazing large oils, pastels and watercolors that graced the walls there. I was deeply moved by each artist’s work on display, of cattle, horses and the Western way of life.

I also had some magical and spiritual visions of the Landscape while in Prescott, and I am sure this will be reflected in the paintings that will come in the near future.

Yes, it was an experience that I will carry with me, and will be implemented in my future works.

I love my journey I am on, exploring myself and this world through the amazing beauty of painting, and being able to share that with you.

Yes, I see so many many artists trying to copy and mimic other successful artists. They paint what they think will sell. It doesn't work.

The work looks like crap (to put it bluntly). The technical skill is usually there, but the work is blaa. There is no fire, no passion…the artist is dead. All for the mighty dollar.

I've enjoyed my creative journey and what I have learned about myself through my paintings. I don't understand why a real artist would rob themselves of that...all for the mighty dollar. I have gained so much more, than money could ever buy. And the icing on my cake??? Is my collectors. They see the work coming from my heart and soul. They want a piece of the artist in every work of art. They're not just buying a pretty picture to hang on the wall, or a sculpture to fill an empty spot on the desk...they are buying love, passion, emotions and the connection to another human that helps them to see and feel something in a different way. This is why my work sells. My collectors tell me this.
Buyers and Collectors aren't stupid, and we shouldn't treat them like they are.

Would YOU want to be treated this way, by an artist? Would YOU buy a work of art that made YOU feel stupid or ignorant? I didn’t think so.

And until you, as an artist realize what you are doing, to your self, to the artist you are copying, to the general public and to Gallery owners, you will not be successful, other than being a successful con artist. You will surly ruin your reputation, fast.

Maybe you lack confidence in what you have to offer? Fear is the killer in many an artist. Fear of rejection, fear of putting your own work out there, to be picked apart by critics, judges, family, strangers….you name it. An Artist does have to be a brave soul and thick skinned. But if you believe in yourself, and your work….others will see that too.

It’s okay to admire other artists and study their technique and how they work. It’s okay to try different materials that those artists use. But in the end, you need to find what YOUR passion is, and how you want to live YOUR life. And most of all: Create what fuels YOUR fire, YOUR passion, YOUR desires. Explore YOURSELF through Art. Be true to YOU and success will be true to YOU.

And the big Moral dilemma is using a successful artist’s name to get into Invitational Exhibits and Galleries. That is damaging. To the artist who’s name you used and to yourself. When you undercut, stab in the back, and turn the knife on your fellow artist, you have set the stage for failure to yourself.

Have a wonderful creative day...and paint and draw with passion you've never felt before! Let the art materials fly!

Taos New Mexico Church with Burro, Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

During my trip to New Mexico, I visited the Taos Church. Yes, the famous, painted often, Church of Taos, NM. It was just about high noon when I visited it, and the shadows were subtle. Actually, with the pea stone rock and the Adobe, the sunlight was down right blinding! And well, it was only around 90 – something degrees that day! But I was loving it.

I took a lot of different angled photos of the Church, I just loved the simple lines and curves, and all the work that went into putting that Adobe onto the ‘bricks’.

I had the image of the mini Burro, my mom had sent me, years ago. I’ve been waiting for just the right back drop to paint him. And, here it is.

This watercolor is painted on 300lb Arches Watercolor paper and is 10 x 12 Inches.

I’ve just about got my bags all packed again. I’m leaving for Sedona, Arizona on Saturday the 13th. I’ll be at the Invitational Exhibit “Lamingtons and Apple Pie” Exhibit that includes Australian and USA Artists. Opening Reception is August 15th at 6:30PM, at the Sedona Arts Center, 15 Art Barn Road. The exhibit dates are August 15-29, 2011. I’ll have 6 paintings there, along with a raffle painting and a few Giclee Prints.

‘Gathering up the reins’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Gathering up the reins 13 x 17 Watercolor on Arches 300lb Watercolor Paper.

The painting is finally finished. I was going to send this to an exhibit I was invited to, but the Lady at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in New Mexico, requested it for her Gallery.

I have other works I can send to the exhibit, so this one will be going to the Gallery. At the moment, the frame I ordered for it, is on back order. Once I have that, I’ll be able to frame it and send it on to the Gallery in NM.

This painting is from the ride I went on in Angel Fire, NM with the Road Runner Tours. This painting depicts the Tour Guide, Gunther, and his dark Palomino mare. This is where we stopped on the side of the mountain that dropped out into an open field. Here the horses rested and we took photos of one another.

Another painting I recently finished of the horse I rode “Bullet'” The coolest place in town, will also be going to the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in NM. Here is an image of it with it’s pretty Gold Wood Frame on. I’ve included the story of the Butterfly, on the back of this painting too. You can scroll down a few posts to read about the Butterflies of Angel Fire.

My next trip is coming right up! August 13th I fly out to Sedona, Arizona. I am in an Invitational Group Exhibit there. The exhibit is ‘Lamingtons and Apple Pie’. It consists of 9 of us, from Australia and the USA. The Opening Reception is August 15th at 6:30PM. There will also be a raffle of works from each artist with proceeds for the Luv shack Horse Rescue Ranch.

The exhibit runs August 15- 29, 2011. Would love to meet you at the reception!

‘Head Games’ Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

This is a scene from the ranch at the Road Runner Tours, in Angel Fire New Mexico, where I went on my trail ride in June 2011.

This poor cowpoke patiently chased this mare around the paddock to put her bridle on. The saddle was on...but she wasn't too quick to give her head. At one point, I helped block her, so she didn't go into another adjacent paddock.

I don’t know how many hours they had gone around one another, while I was off riding through the Forests and Mountains. They weren’t there when we left, but when we got back, 2 hours later, there they were, all hot, dirty and dusty. going around and around.

Many times she seemed she would give in and he got close to her head. He’d gently put a rope over the crest of her neck, to try to use as leverage in hopes she wouldn’t budge. But…off she’d go. About an hour after we got back from our ride, he finally caught her. I think at one point, she jumped into the water trough! I heard the thunderous splash of water and metal.

Once he had her, he climbed on, and away they rode…off into the Mountains. She was calm and no problems at all. I heard someone say, “She’s a great trail horse, once you catch her and get a bridle on”.

Hmmm….is this typical for a female? Head Games. lol

Progress on ‘Gathering up the reins’ Watercolor by Debbie Flood

More progress on 'Gathering up the reins' watercolor.

Now I'm mostly layering more color on, in places to darken things up a bit. This paper (300lb Arches Watercolor Paper) is really thirsty and the colors sink in and 'dull out'. I added more color to the sky, mountains, shadows on the man and his hat. I also started working more on the two trees to the left of the painting.

It seems like slow going now, but it will get finished in the not to far future.

I’ve ordered a gold frame for this, the frame is on back order, and I hope it will get shipped to me in time to put this into an Exhibit I was invited to, in September 2011, located in Raton, NM. Only time will tell.

‘Gathering up the reins’ Watercolor in Progress, by Debbie Flood

This is my latest Watercolor painting, titled Gathering up the reins.

Depicting the Tour Guide that took us through the Forests and Fields in the Mountains of Angel Fire, New Mexico. This area is the same area that Bullet & I were Blessed by the Butterflies. You can read the Blog post before this one “The coolest place in town”-Bullet, for more info about the Butterfly experience.

This little mare is a dark Palomino. Her tail is more grey than white and her color is a dirty looking chocolate horse…lol. You could tell she loved her job, with a little bit of a “hot under the collar” approach to staying ahead of the pack. Definitely an Alpha mare.

It’s interesting to see my three progressive images here, of the painting. I can certainly see what colors my camera picked up, at the time of photographing the painting. This last photo in the bunch, seems to be leaning towards the hues of blues a little too much. Though the foreground does have a lot of blue layered in for shadows, I think that is where the camera picked up the dominating color and changed other areas to match. It always seems to be difficult to get a good color match on a computer screen. On the most part, a lot of my paintings do photograph right when I take the final shot, of the finished painting.

“The Coolest Place In Town”-Bullet. Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Here I am, playing a little ‘catch-up’ with my Blog posts! I’ve been painting fast and furious, to capture my feelings and experiences of New Mexico! My Blog posts got a little behind.

This watercolor, here, is of ‘Bullet’. He’s the horse I rode on the Road Runner Tours in Angel Fire, New Mexico. We took a ride up into the Mountains, well, actually the head quarters was sitting on the mountain! We rode for two hours into the Forest and across a field or two. I was in Seventh Heaven!

On the ride, we came out of the Forest into a clearing that over looked distant fields, Mountains and Eagle Nest Lake. Before we stopped, for some candid photo shots, I had a Butterfly flutter up between Bullet’s ears, over the crest of his neck, the saddle horn, and into my face! Over the top of my head it went, and I warned the rider behind me to watch out for that crazy Butterfly! But before I had the whole sentence out, it veered off into the woods, not bothering the horse and rider behind me. A few minutes after, I had another one do the same exact thing!

We finished up our ride, and back at the ranch, I took a bunch of photos. I hung out in the paddock with Bullet and his friends. Bullet and I formed a really great bond, and I think of him now, often. This painting I have posted here, is after the ride and Bullet hanging out by the water trough. The next day, after the ride, I drove to Eagle Nest Lake and the Cimarron Mountains. At a gift store there, I found a T-Shirt with butterflies all over it. With that Butterfly moment on Bullet, I just had to have the T-shirt!

The next day, after purchasing the Butterfly T-shirt, I took a day trip into Taos with CheyAnne. I told her about my Butterfly experience and the T-shirt. She had a look on her face, like, “No way!” She then proceeded to tell me the New Mexico Spiritual meaning of having a Butterfly flutter into your face.

“When a Butterfly flutters into your face, You are Blessed”.

I had two get into my face, one right after the other.

Bullet and I are very blessed.

The Hot Romance, in the Hot Country of New Mexico is finished!

It was interesting for me, to paint them as they are one entity. I mostly concentrated on the light and shadows and the shapes of items on the land. I also paid attention to the colors and what would most represent what I wanted to show you, what I saw, while in New Mexico for the first time in my life.

I feel as though this was a good starting painting, to lay the path for the rest of the New Mexico paintings that will soon follow.

As I write this, I have started another, of the horse named Bullet, that I rode in the mountains and forests of Angel Fire,NM. That was a very special ride for me and I’ll be posting the painting soon.

New Mexico Romance. A Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

My first day in New Mexico. Well, my first full day in New Mexico, after un-boarding the plane in Albuquerque at midnight, renting the car, finding a Hotel close by, and then hunting down my lost luggage when I left the Hotel later that morning. Yeah, that was an ordeal that really needs it’s own blog post. ha ha.

As I made my 3-4 hour drive North on I25 towards Angel Fire, I was mesmerized by the mountains, gorges and lack of trees! I was constantly stopping to take photos, as camper buses and trucks and cars sped past me, as if they have seen it all, day after day.

After I bypassed Santa Fe and was well on my way towards Taos, there was a large gorge to my left! Click…click…snap…snap…goes the camera.

One such place, a wonderful wide river ran past. There was a nice wide turnout, so I pulled in. When I got out, I was introduced to 100 degree dry heat! The hot breeze was blowing and the sound of the rushing water was relaxing. I could see Kayakers coming around the bend up stream. I snapped more photos of them, as they paddled closer. After a few minutes of taking in the rocky mountains, water and heat, I turned around to find this young couple sitting on the edge of the rocks that hung onto the side of the gorge. They were both wearing white, and pretty much all I could see was the bright hot light bouncing off their white clothing. I immediately saw a painting! All that white light and bounced color in the shadows. I snapped a few photos, the couple was just too busy to even notice I was capturing them. No, I’m not a stalker, only a stalker of images for that next great painting!

The heat was bouncing up off the ground and nearby tar of the highway. It was time to get back in the car, that for some reason, was rented to me “Black with a Black interior”! (go figure!). I switched on the Air Conditioner to high and continued on my way, knowing – hoping, I had captured something good enough of that couple to paint, when I returned to my Studio in Maine.

The image above is the work in progress. I’m working on a Premium Watercolor Board, put out by Cresent, it is 100% Archival all the way through.

I’m enjoying, reliving that day, as I recreate the moment in watercolor.

Progress on The Taos Black Stallion in Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Today I was able to jump right into painting the dust and horse!

It seems that more and more of my paintings are hinting towards abstract. As I think more in relations of shapes with one another and forget about what the actual object is, things start taking on new meanings.

So far, for me, this painting seems about the flow of the mane on the neck of the horse. It’s waving in the dust, almost as if it is free to roam where it pleases. Yet it is attached to the horse and cannot flow away freely. That’s the feeling I was getting from the horse, himself. Here he was loose to do as he pleases in his space, like rolling in the dust and shaking it off, yet he was still confined to walls and fences that kept him from going further. The solid fence behind him, also constrained to stand in that one spot to hold the Black Stallion in. Everything was in it’s place for a purpose. Everything in that space wanting so badly to go beyond the boundaries. So parallel to the human conditions. We all wish to break free, shake the dust off and go! I felt I was able to do that. But in my freedom, I had to leave the Black Taos Stallion behind.

As I paint this, I wonder today, what he is doing. Have others gone to visit him? Has he been taken out of those confining walls and fences? Maybe someday I will know the answers to my questions. And then again, I may not.

Now I’ll be moving on to painting images of New Mexico, from the trip I took in June. The hard part is deciding which image I want to paint first! I have horses, cattle, sage brush, mountains, horse back riding in the mountains, and the Taos Black Morgan Stallion! And of course much more.

You know the saying “One day at a time” ? Well, “One painting at a time” with me!

‘Dancing In The Dust’ Western White Horse Completed In Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I have finished Dancing in the dust. I’m very motivated to start paintings from my New Mexico adventure that I was recently on. So, needless to say, I am working to complete the works that have been in progress, and those that are waiting in the wings to be started.

Meeting the Black Taos Morgan Stallion by Debbie Flood

I was along for the ride, with CheyAnne driving her father’s old pick up truck, that had more Character than the Peanuts Gang! She drove down this dirt road in Taos, NM. It was a hot, dry day and the wind would blow up dust devils every so often. She parked the truck in what seemed like a wide driveway. It’s hard to tell where road, driveways stop and start, with so much dry dirt around.

As we got out and started to make our way across the dirt road, to see a mare and foal out in the green pasture (yes, there was a green pasture!) we heard a whinny. Almost a pitiful whinny, but it had enough energy and lift to it, to make us turn around to see who was talking to us.

It was a black Morgan Stallion. Around the bend a bit, there he stood, with ears perked up, mentally telling us to come see him. With our cameras in tow, and our eyes feasting on this beautiful beast, he waited for us to get near.

He smelled of CheyAnne’s camera, as if to say, is that good enough to take photos of me?

I suppose he was confident enough, that we had a couple of good cameras, he laid down in the dirt and started a rolling dirt bath feast! Over and over he went. At times, he was almost invisible, shrouded in dust that danced in the Taos light. What a photo op! I’m surprised the clicking of our shutter buttons didn’t disturb someone!

Later, after he raised to his hooves, and shook off the excess dust, he went to CheyAnne, and rubbed his head against her, leaving streaks of drool and mucus that turned the dry dust into mud upon her clothes. He loved the attention, and watched us as we walked away. For a few moments, his boring morning, became a fun dust game.

Soon, I will be painting this Black Taos Morgan Stallion, to immortalize him forever. Just what I think he hoped we would do.

Equine and Western Watercolors, Opening Gallery Reception in Angel Fire, NM, By Debbie Flood

Hello from Angel Fire, New Mexico! What a place! Friday night was my Opening Reception of 24 Watercolors at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery, in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The crowd was great and I met some wonderful people! The food was catered and there was live guitar music!
The night was warm and inviting and buzzing with excitement to meet a gal from Belfast, Maine, painting Western and Equine Watercolor paintings.
The people are so warm and welcoming. It almost feels like home here!
Katherine McDermott, Gallery Owner and Artist, is such a warm and fun person! She has been a wonderful host while I’m here.
I’m staying at the Elk Horn Lodge. I love the room with a view off the balcony towards the ski slopes!

This has been an amazing trip, and I’ve been taking lots of images for future art! I cannot wait to see what pours out of me!

Progress on the Western White Horse Watercolor & New Mexico Gallery Opening by Debbie Flood

Today I was able to get some work done on this watercolor Dancing in the dust. Most of my work was concentrated on the rider. Her face, clothes and hands. There is still a lot more layering of color to do on her, but I do like what I have so far.

I’m not expecting to get this painting completed before I head out to New Mexico.

I’ll be leaving on Wednesday the 22 of June. Flying out, I’ll be landing in Albuquerque and driving North to Angel Fire. I cannot wait to see the Country! I’ll be updating my Blog and my Facebook Like Page with my adventures of my trip, while there, as long as I have internet connection and as time allows.

The Opening Reception at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery is June 24th 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

More progress on ‘Dancing in the dust’ white western horse in watercolor by Debbie Flood

‘Dancing in the dust’ watercolor continues.

I’ve darkened the left sky area, with more washes of color. I’ve been using a mix of Cobalt Turquoise & Cobalt Blue. Those same blues are in the horse as well.

Progress on this painting has slowed a bit, as I am layering colors and waiting for paper to dry.

Did you notice the tongue, teeth and gums in the horse’s mouth?

I’m getting butterflies, about my New Mexico trip and the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery debut where I am the “Featured Artist” June 24th. I’ll be leaving June 22nd for Albuquerque. I’ve been a little concerned about the smoke in that area, from the wild fires on the Arizona and New Mexico border. But, I guess I’ll take what ever comes my way.

‘Dancing in the Dust’ Western White Horse Watercolor In Progress by Debbie Flood & A New Mexico Gallery Opening & Trip!

Time in the Studio has been a bit fast and furious the last couple of months. Twenty Four Watercolors have been framed, bubble wrapped and packed into shipping boxes. I actually have four large paintings that still need to be wrapped and boxed up. 17 boxes will ship out on Monday, June 13th, on their way to New Mexico!

June 24, 2011 I am the Featured Artist at the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The Opening Reception, on the 24th, is 5:30PM to 7:30PM.

The 24 Watercolors will consist of smaller ‘Child a day’ paintings that depict children with horses in a Western Setting, Medium size works of young adults interacting with horses in a Western setting, and large works of Cowboys and Cowgirls working and riding with horses and cattle.

I’ll be flying out and staying in the Angel Fire area for a week. There is a 2 hour Horse Back Trail Ride scheduled with my lodging! I’ll be taking day trips to Santa Fe, and Taos. Gallery hopping, painting Plein Air, and photographing the land also fills my list of to dos. Yes, I’m taking my watercolor paints with me! A request by the Gallery owner, as she is also an artist and paints using Watercolors. I think she may have a painting session planned.

This is going to be a trip of a life time for me! My first Featured Artist Gallery Opening! I can’t begin to describe how I feel. So many dreams that are coming to fruition. Dreams I never gave up on. Dreams that have lived inside of me for so many years. Every thing I have ever done with my art, has been pushed by my dream. Yes, I’ve always dreamt big. Why not? Our dreams are personal and they belong to us. We can make them as big as we want.

So, in between my hurriedness of getting ready to face my dream, I have still been working on new Watercolors. Posted above is my progress on the latest Watercolor, Dancing in the dust. This painting is on 300lb Arches Watercolor paper and measures 21 x 27 inches. I think maybe that title is pretty fitting right now. I’ll be dancing in the dust when I touch down in Albuquerque, NM!

My Watercolor Knot listening was one of 50 paintings juried into the National Exhibit. 348 paintings were submitted by artists from across the Country.
I was also invited to Join the Texas Watercolor Society Membership, which I graciously did.

It feels pretty exciting to be exhibiting with some of the most wonderful Watercolor Artists of our time and to be juried into this exhibit by the great Don Getz, a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.

Whispers upon the wind. Progress on this Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I’ve been working still, on Whispers upon the wind. As I add details now, it slows the work progress down. I have added the ‘reason’ for the title. If you look to the right on the horizon you will see shadows of the whispers that move with the wind. I have included a detail image of those whisper shadows.

This Watercolor is on 15 x 21 inch 300lb Arches Watercolor paper.

Whispers Upon The Wind, Western Paint Horse with Rider, Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood.

Can you tell I like to stay busy? Here is another Watercolor that I have going. This one is titled Whispers upon the wind. It is a half sheet, 15 x 21, Arches 300lb paper.

The top photo shows the very beginning of washes applied to the paper. The second photo shows that I have concentrated more on the sky. I’ve been working up the clouds and the depth of the sky, how the clouds recede and come closer.

I also applied some dapples to the back end of the horse. The rider is riding with only a blanket between her and her horse. She also will be wearing the same poncho that I used in the latest watercolor Where the Eagle soars.

Just too much fun! If there is such a thing!

Leg Man, Western Watercolor In Progress by Debbie Flood

I started working on Leg man last week. The puffy vest was a nice challenge! It’s not finished, but I think I have captured that poofy-ness of it pretty well.

This watercolor is 14 x 15 inches. Almost square. I’m working from a photograph that I took last Summer/early Fall at a Barrel Racing event here in Maine. I enjoy taking the subjects out of context and putting them out in a real environment and working situation. The horse was actually tied to a horse trailer and hay bags were hanging. Here I have given them a wonderful background of autumn foliage. You can almost hear the dried grasses and weeds crunch under their feet.

I’ll get more images posted as this work moves along.

Burrowed in the high Country, Burro with rider Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Here is a Watercolor in Progress: Burrowed in the high country. It is 14 x 20 inches on 300lb Arches Watercolor paper.

It’s almost finished. Just a few additions here and there, and maybe work up the sky a bit more. I’m not sure. I’ll have to live with it for a bit before I decide.

I think I took the reference photo for this painting back in 2005 or 2006. I may not get to my photos right away, but I do get to them, after a fashion. I love letting the image steep in my thoughts, until just the right background pops into my head to complete the whole composition and story.

And as I keep painting and growing, the more confident I become, to take on elements that I never dared before. Painting every day sure has it’s advantages!

Double O Squad, Beef Cattle Watercolor by Debbie Flood

A few weeks ago I finished this new Beef Cattle painting Double O Squad. The Watercolor painting is 13 x 17.5 inches. $1,200.00 plus shipping.

I took many reference photos in April of a Ranch Sorting Event here in Maine. They were using young Beef Cattle, as well as some young Dairy Cows.

The Beef Cattle really spoke to me, in more than one way as they walked over to where I was, a lot! But it was their lash filled eyes and thick forelocks and cow licks that grabbed my heart! Along with the play of sunlight and shadows upon them.

There may be a few more Beef Cattle paintings show up in my inventory.

Straw Hat Series in Watercolor Continues, Mother & Child by Debbie Flood

Hey, it’s a new watercolor for the Straw Hat Series! This makes painting number 11 in the series! Wow, I never thought I would get so many paintings from this series, and still want to paint more! Can you guess I am having fun with this?

Mother and Child. What can be more appropriate at this time of year, with Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday! Even the Straw Hat can have a motherly instinct and show compassion, caring and love.

This watercolor at the moment is still in Progress and is 12 x 17 inches and being painted on Cresent Premium Watercolor Board, 100% archival through and through. I had a new order of watercolor paper and boards and paints come in. I’ve been trying a bottle of Gum Arabic. It gives a bit of gloss to the paint, and also helps with the flow and blending control of wet into wet paint. So far, I like it. My duller colors, such as Sepia or Burnt Umber now have a little depth and a wet look about them.

I’m counting down my trip and Gallery Reception in Angel Fire, New Mexico. Seven more weeks before lift off! Time is closing in, and I have a few more frames to order before shipping out the art. This painting shows the intense heat from the day in the Canyon. They are hot on the trail of somebody, and will surely catch up to them soon! The Paso Fino is a wonderful mix of cool blues and warm orange, as is his rider. This is one painting that will surely POP off the wall!

‘Paint Swish’ Watercolor of Western Paint Horse In Progress by Debbie Flood

This is the update on Paint swish, a 17 x 17 inch Watercolor in Progress.

This has become an interesting painting for me. I’ve let go of pre-thought out ways that I would like this painting to go, and have embraced just letting it happen. Yes, I got the preliminary sketches done and some composition worked out and I knew I wanted some kind of impact and dynamic painting, with the horse being quickly turned in mid gallop. So I have used bold color of orange, yellow, and red with blues to make it pop.

I pretty much feel as though I am following along, just as you are. And I am marveling at how and where it is taking me. I’ve mostly been working from the ground up on this painting. Isn’t that the way we often work at things in this life. Moving up our ladder of accomplishments. I’m moving up the ladder of areas in this painting.

Testing a new way to Blog and a new painting in Progress by Debbie Flood

Hi, I’m here testing a new way for me to write to my blog. It is through my Windows Live on my Windows 7 Laptop. This is really nice.

This is a new Watercolor that I am progressing on. I have titled it Paint Swish.

This painting is square, measuring 17 x 17. I’ve been having fun, watching this one develop. I’m letting go and letting the painting just happen.

My favorite part of this painting is the tail of the horse and all the “Fire” that seems to be swishing from it.

The Horse in Art Exhibit at the Seippel Center for the Arts, Beaver Dam Wisconsin. April 17- June 5, 2011.

This is an Invitational Group Exhibit. My Grumpy draft watercolor painting will be among some wonderful Equine Art there. I'm very honored to be hanging with so many highly acclaimed Artists.

'Shallow waters' More Progress, Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I've been working on this "Shallow waters" watercolor. It was originally 30 inches wide. The size wasn't working for me. I realized that after a few weeks of setting it aside. Actually, I started this painting in January. Now that I have cropped the watercolor board down to 23 inches wide, I like it so much better and applying paint has been going rather smoothly. As smoothly as painting with watercolor can go.

I like how this painting is taking me back to the days that I did trail riding as a youth. Being out there with the horse and the land. There's nothing better than that! (At least in my opinion.)

International Equine Artists Founder Debbie Flood

I've been getting a good amount of comments from people that they didn't know I am the Founder of the International Equine Artists. So I thought I would Blog it.
At the moment our membership consists of 112 Members. All creators and lovers of horses in art. Many forms of art too! I have met a lot of Equine Artists from all over the globe.
I built the website, the online exhibits, the Private Member's Online Forum, the email Newsletters and much more.
I hope this doesn't sound like a brag post, I just thought that this bit of information might be useful to others. It also explains where a lot of my time is planted. But don't get me wrong, I am still full steam ahead with my painting, Gallery exhibits and running my Studio Business. I feel that the IEA group is an extension of my talents, and my studio. It all just seems to flow naturally and it is all encircled around the horse in art.
To me, it is all one and the same.
I hope you check out our website and the Spring into Summer Equus 2011 all member online exhibit that is going on right now! There is also People Choice voting! And yes, I have two paintings in the exhibit!

The emotion in this piece is just oozing right out of it. The light bounces around and the colors work so well together.
This truly shows those young emotions we used to have, that only our pets could fix. Sometimes, I think as adults, the only thing that can help us is our pets! They love us, unconditionally. They don't harbor nonsense emotions, only love...and a lot of "Feed me"!! lol.

I remember those days, being a kid, and it seemed like no one cared or understood your side of the story! Being with the horses or the dog always seemed to help. They just seem to understand.

This is one of my latest Watercolors. Secret getaway. You know, when I had horses growing up, I was always making a get away on my pony or horse. Such a wonderful feeling to jump on and go. It takes one to another place and time of imagination and stresses just melt away.
For me, now, I don't have the horse to jump on to 'getaway'. I probably couldn't jump on one now, if my life depended on it! But what does take me away, is creating works like this in my studio. The light in this bounces all around, the colors are bold, and the horse is sculpted in the paint. It takes me away every time I look at it.

If I Only Had A Brain, Watercolor for the Straw Hat Series

I finished If I only had a brain. 16 x 15 Watercolor, $1,200.00. This painting was painted for the Straw Hat Series.
This well pump came from my grandmother, and now my brother has it, and the hat belongs to my father.
Keeping it 'all in the family'.
This poor hat....there he sits...on such a deep subject (The Well), and no brain inside of him to be able to think such deep thoughts! He's in quite a predicament! It doesn't look like he's going to acquire a brain anytime soon either. Out in the vastness of nowhere...sitting on such a deep subject.

The Straw Hat series started with my father's hat and him and my youngest boy playing with it. From the 1st painting I did, of my father, in the watercolor titled: Contented, I soon realized that I wanted to do a series and put the placement of human conditions and emotions to the hat. It soon became, not about the people who might be wearing the hats, but about the conditions we are able to place upon objects that are not alive, but we still have empathy for. It's about the emotions and thoughts that humans harbor. Being able to bring those emotions through, in an object that isn't living, in a painting, is the challenge! Will you, the viewer, feel these things when viewing the painting? Will you know how the hat feels? Will you even notice? And the real question,: Do you or I notice in real life, when it is a human that has these feelings? How often do we over look what is really going on in someone's life?
These are just a few things that my Straw Hat Series is teaching me, and I hope to open the eyes of others to these things as well.

Paso Fino Western Watercolor Progress by Debbie Flood

Most of this last week, has been fighting off a virus! In me, not the computer. My husband has been sick also, staying home from work for the last two days. Hopefully this flu and head cold stuff will move along and we can get back to normal.
I seemed to only have one day that I couldn't function and get to the studio, Most of the time I have managed to get in a few hours of painting time.
I am showing you here, the progress of the Western Paso Fino horse and rider. I think the influence of a fever pushed me to paint this as a hot day in the canyon! I decided to title this one Hot on the Trail. It is still in progress, as I am not sure if I want to develop certain areas more or not. I'll know when I feel a little better and can make rational decisions!

I've been very busy working on new works. I started this Colored Pencil and Watercolor Pencil (with no water) on Mi Teintes gray toned paper. See the image below: (Please excuse the cast shadow across the image. It was taken late in the day.)

I also have the start of this watercolor, of a Silver Bay Paso Fino. The reference shot comes from my Mother. She sent me a CD of images from an Equine Event she attended in Florida a few years ago. I've taken liberty to place the horse and rider in a Western setting. See the image below. ( Please excuse shadows on this image, as it was taken late in the day.)

'Where The Eagle Soars' Desert Appaloosa Western Watercolor Progress by Debbie Flood

Work has started on the sky. While working on the sky, I noticed a white, ghost like, Eagle flying low to the canyon in the sky. I enhanced that presence a bit and decided to title the painting Where The Eagle Soars.

I have been enjoying the colors in this painting so much, that last week I made a paint chip color reference, of the horse, and took it to my house paint store! They were able to match the color and I painted my Living Room wall! I really like it! I still have the Balcony wall, above it, to paint, and the back door to match.
But before getting to that, I have many paintings that need to be finished and started, and finished, for the up coming Summer Gallery exhibits out West!

I'm also building the web pages for the Online Exhibit: Spring into Summer Equus 2011 for the International Equine Artists Member Exhibit. That exhibit goes live April 1st!
Also, for this Membership, I am building a full page group ad that will be in the Western Art Collector Magazine, May Issue, The Art of the Horse!

And speaking of ads, don't miss my ad in the April Issue of the SouthWest Art Magazine. It is in with the Contemporary Fine Art International group ad.

Desert Appaloosa Watercolor Painting More Progress, by Debbie Flood

I got some work done over the weekend on the Desert-Appaloosa Watercolor.
I am so liking the color palette.
It's moving right along, and shouldn't take much more to get it finished. I'm probably a little more than half way done on this painting. I worked on it today, but I don't have an updated image of today's work yet. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get an update image for you.

Desert Appaloosa Watercolor Painting in Progress, by Debbie Flood

This is the start of my watercolor Desert painting. Appaloosa Horse. I'm loving this color palette! Indian red, Cad Orange, Cobalt blue and Cobalt turquoise, Sepia, and another Cad Red-Orange and Quince Yellow.
This painting is 19 x 16. Since I will be going out to various Western places this Summer (New Mexico and Arizona), I thought I would work on a desert landscape painting now. I think it would be cool, to create the painting that is in my head, my thoughts and imagination of what the Western Landscape looks like, or might look like. Then when I go out there, I can compare my thoughts and painting to how it really looks! It's a little exploration of my imaginative mind to the real world. And I get a fun painting out of it too!

My Watercolor Painting Knot Listening was selected to be included in the 62^nd Texas Watercolor Society’s Exhibition to be held June 1-30 2011 at the San Antonio Art League and Museum.
Yes!! Another Museum Exhibit!
348 entries were submitted but only 50 paintings could be selected, the limit allowed by the available exhibition space. I was speechless to read that in the acceptance letter! I'm in the 50 that made the cut!
How surreal! How wonderful!
If you are in the San Antonio Texas area, I hope you can visit the exhibit in June!

This is an update on the progress of "The climb" watercolor. Still a bit more to work on, but it is almost finished!

Love creating those rocks! It's so meditative. You'll find rocks like that throughout a lot of my paintings. I think they are becoming a bit of a trademark, so to speak.
I used to collect rocks as a kid. Living here in rocky Maine has it's advantages. We have stone walls that divide our land, rocky coast lines and lots of ledge that pops up through the earth. My home now, sits on ledge. Makes for a great rock garden!
So rocks are personal to me. Painting each one, they all have a personality, just like the animals that I paint.

'The Climb' Western Grulla Horse and Cowgirl Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

Once I had "Wild Flowers" finished, it was time to get another underway! This is the Progress on The Climb.
I loved the blues and oranges in this horse! When I took the reference images a few years ago, the sun was washing across their backs and the horse's tail was casting long shadows across his hind quarters. Just gorgeous!
I've been keeping my palette limited as much as possible to the blues and orange & reds. I want to keep it fresh and popping!

Hopefully I can get enough works done for both the New Mexico Solo Exhibit and the Arizona Group Exhibit, coming up this Summer! It looks like I will have enough, and some left over if you would like to purchase something before those exhibits.

I have a lot coming up for exhibits! The two big ones: One being New Mexico with a Solo Exhibit in the Angel Fire ArtSpace Gallery in Angel Fire, New Mexico with an Opening Reception June 24, 2011. This exhibit will be full of my Equine and Western Themed Art! And I get to meet you! I'm so looking forward to the trip. I'll be gathering reference material to paint from while I'm in that area too.
The second big exhibit is the Sedona Art Center Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. This a group exhibit with artists from Australia and the USA. Opening Reception is August 15, 2011. The exhibit runs until August 29, 2011. And once again, I will be going, and I'll get to meet you there too! And yes, more opportunities for gathering reference material for future paintings!
I just received my acceptance letter to my City's 'Arts in the Park, here in Belfast, Maine July 9 & 10, 2011. I'll have my booth set up both days.
And there are other exhibits that are asking for paintings...so paint, paint...I must paint! Such a hard job..ha ha...Not!

More progress on "Shallow Waters" Western themed Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Yesterday I worked more on "Shallow waters" Watercolor. The white horse really wasn't working for me. So, I changed his color. He's now more of a Palomino color and I think it goes better with the surrounding colors in the painting. I washed in a sky and some grasses, and now, am liking it better. It was a bit of touch and go, whether I was going to like this painting and continue with it.
I didn't work on this today. I let it sit and worked on finishing a Resin Pony Model that I had started back before Christmas. I will post that in a separate post.
