Baking and wrapping gifts...oh the magic! I haven't been into the studio very much. Which means many projects have come to a halt. Though I'm very anxious to get back in there, I am enjoying the fun and magic that this Holiday is placing upon my 9 year old son! I've been to the Grade School concert, watching him and my Step-Grandson sing....even more magic! We've been out and about, shopping and going to the movies. I have to put a plug in here for the movie 'Avatar'! Both my son's loved this movie, as did I and their dad! The art, design and graphics in this movie is spectacular. And I just loved the animals that live on Avatar!

In between all this fun, we have been battling a few bugs that have tried to bring us down, but we won't stay down for long! I hope.

This is a very busy time of year for a lot of people, which can be stressful. I hope you can slow down and enjoy the magic of this time of year. And also think about those who are not as fortunate, who may be feeling a little sad or down. And please be mindful of giving pets this time of year. All the hoopla of the festivities can scare new pets, also, make sure that the person you are giving the pet to, can take care of them properly.

The New Year will be bringing in some changes to my studio. One being a new Website design that will be cleaner and neater. And the other will be a change to the Child a day project. If you have read my Blog posts, then you are probably aware that the price of the Child a day paintings, and other paintings will have a price increase. This is necessary for the Studio to keep on thriving. The Child a day will also be scaled down to about 3 new paintings each week. Other works and older Child a days will be posted on the days that there will not be a new one for that day. Which only consists of 2 days each week with an older work or a large work I've been working on. You will still be getting a post each day, Monday through Friday's.

I wish you all a joyous season and I will be back to the regular studio schedule in the New Year!

Merry Christmas!

Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. Common questions I get from the buying public are these: "Why does it seem to be so costly?" " Do you accept discounts?" " Is that price firm?"
People seem to be fixed on the price of a piece and not the actual piece of art. I think we are all in this mind set when we have to open our wallets for something that isn't a necessity, like food, gas, and a roof over our heads is.
This can be stressful for the Artist. Many artists are professional Artists. They run their studio as a business, not as a hobby. When you have a product to sell, discounts can be costly to the business and to the artist who needs to collect a paycheck. It is also an insult to the artist when a discount is asked for. It tells the artist that you feel their work isn't worth the price they have put on it. So, then the artist feels as though they should sell for less, because their work carries no value. This can also cause a spiral of events for the artist, that is not good.
Another reason I am writing this article is because I am about to raise my prices on my original paintings, in the New Year. This price increase will make a few drop their jaw to the floor. But it is a necessity to keep my studio in operation. I report to the IRS just like any other business. And I don't like claiming a loss at the end of the year. I want to stay in business and I want collectors to enjoy my paintings and to reap the benefits of investing in a work of fine art, created by me.

I am going to list what the collector and purchaser is really buying when they purchase an original piece of art.

You, the collector, is purchasing the Artist. And also helping to keep that Studio in operation. So in a sense, when you purchase original art, you are also investing in your own purchase, because if the artist stays in operation, your purchased art holds its value and often goes up in value.

What does it cost to run a Studio and keep an artist afloat?

Memberships. Most Professional Artists are affiliated with prestigious art groups. These groups collect yearly dues. As an example, I am in the National Association of women Artists. This annual membership dues are over $100.00. I am a member of the Equine Art Guild, the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society and the Society of Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators. I'm also looking into some other affiliations for my Genre of painting. All these memberships cost. But they are needed so we may learn more, keep up with the art world and learn about our art.

Workshops, Books, Magazines all keep us at the top of our game. We never stop learning and need to stay in touch with what is happening in the art world and to learn our fine art and materials.

Websites Artists have to pay for web hosting and if they don't have time & knowledge, then they need a webmaster to design and keep the website updated. This is all very costly. Don't you love going to your favorite artist's website to look at their art?

Photography equipment or a Professional Photographer to take images of our work so we can post it on our websites, blogs, have Prints made, cards made, for the buying public. Artist also use those images to enter Art shows and submit to Galleries. Many artists also work from their own photographs to produce a work of art, so they need a decent camera (and all the equipment to help it run) to capture what they need.

Computers. I think we all know why an artist needs a computer. That goes back to that website idea. And to also communicate through email with clients and customers. To write Blogs, like this one. To write and store business documents. I know I would be completely lost to the world if I didn't have a computer.

Studio Rent is costly too. I rented a studio for several years. Paying monthly rent. If an artist doesn't rent a studio, they still have a room in their home that creates expenses. It probably evens out to what they were paying for rent in a public place.

Exhibit, show fees & shipping. These add up very quickly. All artists have to pay a jurying fee, to get into a show. If it is an out of State venue, then the artist has to ship the art. Some artists travel to those venues. All booth shows collect a booth fee from the artist. We have to rent our space to sell there. Plus buy gas, food and sometimes lodging while at this booth show. To ship work, we have to buy "Airfloat" boxes made specific for shipping fine art. These are very costly boxes, but thankfully they can be reused over and over.

Advertising and print material. Business cards, postcards, and advertising in magazines and newspapers are all costly. We must advertise, to get our product out there and our name known. We need business cards to hand out to potential clients. Post cards to mail out to Galleries and spread the word about our art. Brochures to give a little more info about us. These all costs and they add up quickly.

Time taken from the artist to write Blogs, to post images of the paintings and to answer emails. This is all necessity time, but still takes the artist away from creating. Updating the Books, and secretary work.

Materials. finally we get to the materials needed to create the art. Have you ever gone to an art supply store? Online or in your City, the prices there would scare you!
Framing. This one really hurts! If the artist does their own framing, then the right equipment is needed to cut mats, and properly frame the piece. Or go to a Framer in the City and pay loads to have it professionally done.
Sculptures: To have a Bronze made from a clay work, the clay work has to be shipped to a foundry to be fired. Many foundries are in another State from the artist. I'm not knowledgeable in all that is involved with this type of art, but I do know it is very costly!

Galleries. Galleries take anywhere from 50% and up of the original asking price to cover their expenses in selling that work of art. When you walk into a Gallery and see $10,000.00 on a piece, the artist does not get all of that. If the artist is lucky, they may get half. But that artist had to either drive that work of art to the Gallery or ship it. Either way, it costs, so saying the Artist even got half of that $10,000.00 is a long shot.

So, when you look at a piece of original, hand made, fine art, please remember, that there is more than just the artist sitting up to that drawing table or standing at the easel or working at the potter's wheel, that is involved in keeping an artist afloat. There are many factors involved with that price tag you are looking at. You are investing your belief in that artist and in the work you have purchased.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article on "prices affixed to Art". I hope that it enlightens all to the real life of a professional Artist.
Happy collecting,
Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. Well, I think it is completed. I've been looking it over and letting it set for awhile. Then I will decide if I need to adjust colors and values or not.
This is "Working the bay" 13 x 14 Watercolor. The image is from a Barrel racing event I was at a year ago.
There is a nice glow going on here with the low sun. Lots of atmosphere. And the horse being so attentive to the handler. They are in their own little world.
Thank you for looking,
Debbie
Debbie Flood, Artist. Equine, Wildlife, and the natural world.

I am now an Associate Member of the American Watercolor Society, AWS, and an Associate Member of the National Watercolor Society, NWS.
These are sustaining associate memberships. With acceptance into several of their National competitions, I will then be eligible to seek Signature Member status. That is when I can use the initials of the club after my signature on watercolor paintings & be considered a Full Member. It's a very prestigious honor to get to that point! You can check out the links I have posted here to go view their websites and learn more about these organizations.
I'm looking forward to see what I can learn from these organizations and the new artists that I may meet.

For a little fun, I put the image of the watercolor, "Grumpy Draft", in my photo lab in my computer and digitaly drew a Santa hat on him. She was at the exhibit with her award winning sculptures, and also took photos of the art. Thank you Yvonne!

This year, I'm told by the coordinator, that the fair grounds was handling the paperwork and that this is the 1st time they have switched who does what. So a little glitch. They expect next year to go much smoother with this process.
The Draft Horse Classic is a very pretigious event and draws in a large Draft Horse crowd with their Drafts, every September. It's held on the Nevada County Fair Grounds. It's a very big deal to just get a work of art acepted into the art exhibit, which I had two accepted. But then to find out I won an award was even sweeter!

Debbie
Debbie Flood, Artist. Equine, Wildlife, and the natural world.

This top image was the progress on it from Saturday (Yesterday). Defining and finding shadow layouts. And enriching the right horse's bridle. I also filled in with under painting on the face of the horse to the left.

This image, to the top here, shows work done on Sunday (today). I had to laugh, when my husband looked at this last stage, he asked, "What have you done?". Ha ha...he's so funny! Detail is what I've done! Detail I say! And more layering of color. Watercolor is transparent and layering is the key to luminous glowing color! Look to the area to the left just over the horse's rump. You should be able to see I darkened that green. Brought it up to the level of the dark green over the right horse's rump! This frames them and pushes them into one another. I'll also go into that left top corner too, with more dark. It will balance things a bit more. I also worked on getting the color, on those glowing orange reins, a little more 'rich'. And defining the shadows on those so they pop up off the horses. And look to the muzzle and nostril of the horse to the left and you will see I also enhanced that area and made it 'pop' out a little more. It's so fun to 'sculpt' with the paint! Always remember, that if you want an item believable, make your brush strokes go in the direction of the object you are painting. Sculpt it. And use shadows to define shapes.

I hope you enjoyed this little update.

~Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. This Watercolor is 18 x 15 inches. I really love this painting. The colors are all harmonious with the background colors in the horse and the horse colors in the background. Using shadows, I was able to define the mane more and give it an appearance of hanging away from his neck. And also the appearance that sunlight is glowing off from it in places. This is a very pleasing painting and it would make such a nice addition to your Equine art collection or the start of a new collection.

If you are interested in adding a print of this to your collection, let me know and we can discuss what size would best fit your needs. This is how far I have come on this as of today. This image is 13 x 14 inches. I took the reference photo at a Draft Horse Show this past Summer. I took so many photos that day. These two were part of a six horse hitch of dark red bay Percherons. I decided to crop the image to get an intimate feeling with the two up front, leading the pack. I'm getting very addicted to this painting. I go to bed at night, thinking how I would love to work on it...but my lighting isn't very good in the studio at night. Not for getting true colors anyways. I've been thinking about those lights that create daylight in the studio. I may do some research on those. But then...I would be tempted to stay up at all hours of the night painting! That might not be so good for me. I wouldn't get much sleep and my family really wouldn't like me then! So I work hard all day on it, get a good nights sleep and jump out of bed in the morning...rearing to go at this painting again!
I finished the grumpy draft horse. I haven't photographed it yet. I'm waiting for the best lighting situation to get a true to color image. A client saw it in person tonight and she really liked it. I think it will be a popular image! Maybe a Giclee reproduction is in store for that painting. He's such a moody, grumpy horse, with a tangled mane!

Thank you for following my Blog. I enjoy painting and I really enjoy showing them to you. Even better is when you like them enough to add them to your collection. It just so happens to be my Studio Holiday Postcard image for this year!

This wonderful reference image hails from my archived photo files from the local horse shows. Hey, can you see the wrap of bullets around the withers of the horse? This boy is learning young, how to ride the weather and work hard. I'm sure he'll understand what that means when he reads this. Yes, this is a very special painting indeed. And yes, his mom has seen it and ordered her print of it! So that means,,,the original is up for grabs!

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. I had thought about taking the day off from the Child a days, but realized I'll be taking time off during the Thanksgiving Holiday, so I hope you can join me tomorrow for something very special. It is an image sent in by a follower/reader and I'm sure it will be appreciated to share it with everyone tomorrow.

Until then, enjoy the child a days and remember, you can always submit an image to the child a days, by sizing your JPG to 5 x 7 at 300dpi and send it on through to my email. I look forward to immortalizing your young one, with a favorite pet too!

Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. I have a slug of images from this past summer, where I took photos of these draft horses (Belgians) at a farm in their pasture. I was actually at a horse show and these big guys live next door, across the road. I know the owner, and I saw him start to go over to his pasture from the show. Over there was a group of children with parents, looking at the peacful giants out there grazing. Some of the horses noticed the people at the fence and started to wander over to see what they might have for treats, I suspect. I knew this would be a great photo op...the large horses, the small horse crazy little girls! So over I went! The owner ducked under the fence and grabbed the halterless head and over they sauntered. The other horses all soon followed.
I bet at this point you are wondering, why was this horse so grumpy?! Well, he was more jealous than anything. You see, these big guys love attention! And if one thinks someone else in the herd is getting more lovin' and pats than him...well, he shoots a warning look at the attention hog! I loved the drama that was playing out with this guy. In the reference photo the other horse is right under his neck and head, but I decided to leave all that out and let the viewer come to his/her own conclusion as to why this guy is looking so grumpy. Looks like a bad hair day with all those tangles in his mane!
This painting is 18 x 15, created with Watercolors. These photos are the work in progress. The top image shows the full painting. The middle photo shows it on the easel and helps you see the size of the piece in reference to the easle and other things. The last photo is a close up of the head, so you can see the details that have been added already.
Today I worked on the tangled mane. I'll get a photo of that, hopefully tomorrow.

~Debbie
Debbie Flood, Artist. Equine, Wildlife, and the natural world.

Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

This image was submitted by a new Facebook follower. She tells me this is an image of a rescued Arabian and her grandson. I loved the challenge of painting a Flea bitten white horse! For those of you who doesn't know what flea bitten is, it is what a grey or white horse has all over them, lots of speckles and slashes of a reddish brown color. This is common in the Arabian Breed.

I also am glad she sent in the image of a rescue. There are so many animals in need of our help. If you can visit a horse rescue or an animal shelter in your area to find out what you can do to help would be great! I have a dog that came from a shelter and I'm so glad I did! He's my studio buddy and follows me everywhere! He loves the kids too.

I still have room for more images, for the Child a day, if you want one or more done up for the Holiday season! Send images to my email, sized at 5 x 7 300dpi, would be nice. I love the emotion going on in this painting. It reminds me of the times I used to stay out in the horse pasture with the horses and pretend I was one of the herd. I used to toss my long hair and stomp the ground.I suppose in a way, this is a self portrait. I love the Earth and nature. My senses in tune to the shift of the seasons and the change in the wind.

This work is available for purchase. He always has a wonderful outfit at the horse shows. This coat was no exception! I think the painting pretty much speaks for its self here. The coat has a split up the back for ease in riding, and as he walked along leading his horse, it was flipping in the breeze he created with his swiftness.

You can also find this painting in my book, "Painting a child a day, the first six months, Volume 1". There are a lot of children and horses in this book. My favorite subject matter. The link to the book is at the top right of this Blog.

~Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. The hair and lighting of it really intrigued me. So I decided to paint a large version. This watercolor measures 14 x 17 and has a couple days into it. I have painted horses so much with mane and tail flying, that I am now finding human hair just as fun.

I've been very busy with the Child a day paintings, and finishing up my book: "painting a child a day, the first six months, volume 1". I have the ISBN numbers and the Bar codes in place and once the Bio pages are finished and proof reading done, it will go to the publisher for printing. Contact me at debflood@debfloodart.com if you would like to pre-order in time for Holiday shipping. Hard cover with Dust Jacket is $45.00 and Soft cover is $35.00. The lighting is low in the studio today, not so good for taking photographs, but this image is pretty close to the real painting. It may be a little lighter, brighter than what is showing here. It really has a nice glow in it, as though the deer is in some evening light.
I've been working everyday, painting a child a day. You can see those images at http://www.paintingachildaday.com

Saturday, October 10th, I will be at the Open house, Reception for the 'Care for your child' Exhibit at the Round Top Farm Gallery, 32 water street, Damariscotta, Maine 11am- 5pm. I won't be there the whole day, but I plan on being there the middle of the day. My Child a day painting "The solo" is in this exhibit.

"The solo" 5 x 7 Watercolor.

Thank you for reading and share with family and friends,
Debbie
Debbie Flood, Artist. Very exciting. My painting "The solo" will be at The Round Top Center for the Arts in Damariscotta, Maine on rt 1. The opening reception for that exhibit is October 10, 2009 11AM-5PM. The Harlow Gallery, in Hallowell, Maine, will have their opening reception October 3, 2009 5Pm- 8pm. I've decided that I will go to the Round Top Opening reception in Damariscotta on October 10. That is where my art will be hanging. This exhibit will run from October 2~25, 2009. This exhibit is to bring awareness to child abuse and to show families how children should be cared for. I'm so pleased to have a 'Child a day' painting included in an exhibit like this. It brings a whole new meaning to this project.

Debbie

Debbie Flood, Artist. Each 5 x 7 is created on watercolor board with a half an inch white border and comes sealed in a clear sleeve, until you are ready to slip it into a mat and frame.
