Progress on the Appaloosa and rider Graphite, by Debbie Flood

Here is the work so far on the Graphite painting of the Appaloosa and rider. The paper size is 11 x 14.
I'm enjoying this painting, getting back into graphite a little and of course getting into painting an Appaloosa! They hold a special place in my heart, having been raised on an Appaloosa Horse farm, with foals being born, my dad training them and how they became a family member. Those horses will forever gallop in my heart.

"Green broke" Western Watercolor by Debbie Flood

Green broke 19 x 16 Watercolor $1,500.00 inquiries may come to debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.
This painting was created using my own reference photos from a Maine Barrel Racing event I recently attended. I usually get a good amount of images to work from at these events. Being there and observing them, I get a feel for how the painting should be put together. Usually the photo I take is the beginning of the creation of the art for me. The minute I see something when I photograph it, I'm already processing the composition and the place I will put them in and sometimes the time of day.
It just all seems to click for me, when it is a good image, scene and so on.

Thanks for reading and looking,
Debbie

Graphite portrait of Appaloosa and young rider, by Debbie Flood

This is an example of really bad lighting for the photographing of this graphite! The background paper really is white!
But, I think you can get the feel for what I have done so far on this Appaloosa and young rider portrait.
I really like how this is coming out. The connection that these two have seems to be coming through and just how happy the two of them are.

I hope you have a great weekend! I plan on heading to a Barrel racing event Sunday, as long as the weather holds out.

Appaloosa Graphite By Debbie Flood

I started a graphite today of this Appaloosa and rider. I am only showing the work I have done today, and not the whole 11 x 14 sheet of paper.
I photographed this horse and rider at a local horse show last weekend. They were/are such a nice pair!

'Quitin' time Watercolor of a Cowboy by Debbie Flood

Hello everyone!
The last to weeks have been a bit of a blur. I have worked on this watercolor of the cowboy. I'm calling this one 'Quitin' time". I haven't decided if it is finished yet.
I also started a graphite drawing today too. I'll be posting that on my blog http://debbieflood.blogspot.com

Today is the opening of the Draft Horse Classic, Art at the Classic, Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley, Ca. I have two watercolors there, 'Grumpy draft' and Lift off'. I'm anxious to hear how the show is going, as I have a couple of artist friends who will be stopping in there this week and weekend.

Most of the week I have been getting the organization done of our new equine artists group, International Equine Artists Group. You can check out the website here: http://www.internationalequineartists.com I'll be working on the artists directory pages as new members come in and I receive images of theirs to put on the site. It's been hectic putting it all together, but I've been having fun, so I guess that is half the battle!
Things are easing up a bit now with it (for me) and I'm getting back to painting and creating.

Have a great end of your week and weekend!

Hmm Straw Hat Watercolor finished and a new Equine Artists Group by Debbie Flood

Hmm 12 x 16 watercolor $1,200.00. This is painting number 6 in the straw hat series. Inquiries about this painting may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com

I must say, with the developments of the last couple of days...This painting is very fitting! I have been doing some serious "Hmmm-ing"!!

I know some of you know already that there has not been a horse artist group for awhile. Some artists tried to get something together, but with so many having busy lives and just not enough time in the day, the new group didn't form. It was given it's best shot, but sometimes, that's how it goes.
So, with much contemplation and thought, I am starting a new horse art group for artists who create using the horse as subject matter. This group is open to anyone at any level, 18 Yrs and older. In order to get this off the ground, I need paying members. With the dues I will purchase a website for the group and it will consist of a private members pages for sharing and input and discussions, and a public site that will show case equine art member exhibits, and a member list with links to their websites. The dues are $25.00 a yr.To read more about this group and become a member, you can go to a page on my website with info and a Paypal button to sign up for membership. http://www.debfloodart.com/debbie_flood_017.htm
I already have a few paid members and many who say they want to be a part of us. So, things are well on their way to developing into an Equine Artists group.

Thank you for following along and I hope you are enjoying this nice Fall like day!

A Calf watercolor in progress by Debbie Flood

Here is the little Calf I started today in watercolor. This painting measures 14 x 15. I saw this little guy at the fair that I had been to recently. So cute! I've changed the coat color to suit my needs for this painting.
This was a nice diversion from all the detail I have been doing in the Green broke watercolor.

Thanks for looking and enjoy the art!

'Green broke' watercolor is getting closer to being finished, by Debbie Flood

Today I worked on darkening different areas of the Green broke watercolor painting.
The distant hills, foreground and the horses. I'm almost finished with it.

Just to have some fun and let loose, I started a watercolor of a Calf. I'll post that in a seperate post.

Have a great Tuesday!

More progress on 'Green broke' Western Horse Themed Watercolor by Debbie Flood

I've been working on this watercolor painting, Green broke, 16 x 19. I still have a ways to go on it. Mostly been working on the foreground rocks as of late. This is really a nice large watercolor. This image is from my photos I took at the Maine Barrel Racing event a few weeks ago. At the fair grounds there is a driveway that goes up hill near the ring and barns. When I came around some trucks and trailers, here this scene was. I loved it! They were standing at the top of the dirt hill and I imagined them out in the wilderness at the top of a mountain. Having ridden up on mountain tops here in Maine when I was a youth, I remember all too well, the gorgeous views and the breeze that passed us by.

Not much else has been going on in the studio, other than painting up a storm! I have dates for the Sedona, Arizona exhibit next year: August 15-29, 2011 at the Sedona Arts Center.
The 19th Annual Breckenridge Fine Art Museum Exhibit is still up, in Breckenridge, Texas. I have the watercolor painting Back in the saddle there with many accomplished Western Artists. The exhibit is up through September 25, 2010.
I hope you are having a great Monday!
Speak again soon,
Debbie

Green Broke Western Watercolor in Progress by Debbie Flood

Today I put the sky into Green broke 19 x 16 watercolor. I also added the distant mountains and worked on the saddle of the Bay.
I can see that this image has a bit of a Pink glow to it, almost a hint of purple about it. It is Cobalt blues and a pretty green-blue. I tried to adjust the blue in my photo program, and something went astray! ha ha.

I'm loving the composition of this one and the airy mountain breeze. I always loved riding up onto mountain tops and looking out over the valleys and trees. There's something about that vantage point that is empowering and refreshing. Every time I get a chance to use that vantage point in my paintings, I do.

I hope your weekend is going great!

Twisted Watercolor progress for the Straw Hat Series by Debbie Flood

I thought I had posted this painting on here also. Guess I didn't.
This is a watercolor 12 x 14 titled Twisted, for the Straw Hat Series. This one is finished now, but the image here is in it's "In progress" stage. I will be photographing the finished painting soon.

Debbie

"Green broke" Western Watercolor in progress by Debbie Flood

"Green broke" 16 x 19 Watercolor in progress. I worked all day today on this painting. The image is from some shots I took the first of the week at a Barrel racing event here in Maine. I've cropped the photo to show just the work I have done so far on this painting. There is a lot more space around them and I will be updating with a new image in a few days.

Thanks for looking and following,
Debbie

Hmm Watercolor progress for the Straw Hat Series by Debbie Flood

This one was started yesterday! I'm really loving it! Especially the shirt. This is pretty large, Somewhere in the 12 x 15 range. Sorry, It escapes me what I measured it at. I do know that it is watercolor...ha ha. I guess I'm sticking the title of Hmm to it. Unless I come up with something else.
Another overcast day today, so the lighting isn't to great for photographing in the studio....again. This image has some issues, but pretty well represents the real thing. I think the blues are a bit saturated in the image, than they are in the real painting.
I also started another painting today. That one is a Western Horse theme. I'll be posting that one on my Blog as well as my public facebook page. I had so much fun painting on it, that I painted right through lunch time! I'm very pleased with it so far. http://debbieflood.blogspot.com

I hope you have a great weekend and I'll update you next week. If you want more updates, sooner, you can check out my public Facebook page or my Blog, thanks.

Time has yet to come Straw Hat Series Watercolor #5 by Debbie Flood

This is Time has yet to come, 10 x 15 Watercolor, $1,200.00. Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com This is painting number 5 in the Straw hat series. I created this one in one day and a few minutes of the next day, which was today. I also have created another straw hat painting and that will be finished soon, if it is not already. I'll take a look at it tomorrow. I have so many Straw hat images waiting for me. They are the most fun to paint! I don't really know why either, with all that detail of weaved straw! But for now, it is my muse and I am following my heart. They really look good together. What a cool solo exhibit this would make when and if I ever finish painting straw hats!
Maybe some will go to the Sedona, Arizona Exhibit next Summer. I'll have to think about that, and see what I have created by that time.
Time has yet to come, interesting title don't you think? As she stood there with her pony, I wondered what she was thinking. What was she waiting for? It surely was for something to happen in the future. I really didn't want to use the word future in my title. So I looked up the word in the dictionary. I loved the definition that was before me in that print. The painting had a title. I added the word has to the wording. The dictionary only listed time yet to come. If she is waiting for the future, then the dictionary version wouldn't do.
I hope you enjoy this painting and the info behind the title.

'One last glance' Watercolor of cowboy finished, by Debbie Flood

Hi, I hope those of you in the USA States had a wonderful Labor day weekend. Those who don't observe the Labor day, I hope your weekend was just as great! I sure had a busy one! 2 days of photographing! I went to the Windsor Maine State Fair and shot some great photos of the barrel racing events and of course other animals at the fair. And you would not believe the shots I got of straw hats!
I also went to a local horse show and got some great images of the kids and horses, as well as the adults. I've got some great reference material to work from.
Today has been a catch up day. I have boxed and labeled the boxes for delivery to the Draft Horse Classic, Art at the Classic, Grass Valley, Ca. Grumpy draft and Lift off are headed there for the art exhibit.
I'm sharing an image, here, of the finished watercolor One last glance. This painting is 17 x 21. It will accompany the Big sky dreams painting to go through a jury process, for an exhibit. Took me awhile, but I got them both photographed well enough to send the photos to the jurors.

I hope to do some painting tomorrow, and will hopefully have something new to show you. I have so many great images from this past weekend, I don't know where to start first!
Have a great week!

It's been very hot here in Maine. Even the High school shut down after lunch today, because the school was too hot inside. Over 100 degrees on the second floor! Out on the paved driveway was beyond even mentioning! The Grade School was released an hour later.
While I've been comfortable in the studio, with AC going, the heat still makes one "tired". Doing these little ACEO's was a nice change in my pace. I enjoy doing these miniature paintings. It is my hope that you are enjoying them too.

Talk with you tomorrow,
Debbie
