'Shy' Watercolor for the Straw Hat Series Completed by Debbie Flood
Shy 13 x 15 Watercolor for the Straw Hat Series is finished. Interesting, isn't it, how he's sitting out there in a field a little bit down off the top of the hill. Maybe he feels insecure at the very top, or maybe he is working on getting to the top. So much can be interpreted into this painting, depending on what is going on in the life of the viewer. That is what is so fun about art. We often learn things from a painting, about ourselves. We all have a story and one image can conjure up so many different stories and so many different lives. Though we are different, we are still the same. Art shows us this. Notice too, that the hat can also be given the same feelings as the boy has. It isn't resting at the top of the boys head. It's a little down, on the side of the head. Afraid of being on top? Or working to get there?
This is what I am trying to say with the straw hat series. It doesn't matter the object, alive or not, we can relate and put a human emotion and condition to it.
Just a little food for thought on this eve of the weekend.
Today, I've been baking cake! We are putting on a BBQ birthday party here at the house for my 2 boys on Saturday. The weather is going to be awesome, lots of food, family and friends!
Sunday there is a Horse show I'll be attending with camera in hand!
I hope you have a great weekend and I'll catch up with you on Monday, which is next month!

'Sly peep' Western Watercolor for the Straw Hat Series by Debbie Flood
'Sly peep' 11 x 14 Watercolor is finished! $1,200.00. Inquiries may come to my email debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.
I had every intention of sending this update out yesterday! I imaging that you can relate to busy Summer days! I don't know where the time went yesterday!
I love the light in this painting. I wanted to capture that feeling of a hot day, and I do believe I did it.
I gave my blog a much needed face lift, if you haven't been here to notice! I changed the template all together and the colors. I like it a lot better now. I'm able to add more photos that stay on the page and I also added another 'page' to the Blog. Up at the top of the Blog is a navigation bar and pages are listed there. I added a page for the Straw Hat Series. When the paintings are completed, I'll add them to this page. You can visit the Blog here : http://debbieflood.blogspot.com
I have a few more straw hat images to get sketched out and transferred to watercolor board. I also have another image waiting to be sketched out of a very colorful cowgirl, paint horse and child. So many ideas, thoughts and images, so little time (as the saying goes).
Stay cool! Or warm if you are on the other side of the big pond!
Chat with you later,
Debbie

'Secrets' watercolor update on WIP and a Gallery exhibit by Debbie Flood
Here is an update on 'Secrets', a watercolor painting for the straw hat series. I've been laying in heavy color to get that hot day feeling. This image is 11 x 14 in size.
I don't think I have shared the news, that when I was at the downtown Waterville Maine art festival with my booth, I made a Gallery contact. The byDesign Gallery in Bangor, Maine invited me to be a part of his Gallery exhibits. I have been put on the roster of artists on his website and I'll be exhibiting a work in his latest exhibit "Down East sails up town". The exhibit runs August 21 through October 2, 2010. If you would like to check out the website then follow this link: http://www.bydesignartgallery.com The Gallery is located at 20 Harlow Street, Bangor Maine. It is in the downtown district.
I'm looking forward to this exhibit and many more with byDesign Gallery.
Have a great Tuesday,
Debbie

'Secrets' progress in watercolor Straw Hat Series and People's Choice on BoldBrush
Hi, I hope your Monday is going well! After a bit of a hectic weekend, I was able to settle down a little today and get some washes laid down on this watercolor painting 'Secrets'. Please ignore the dark shadow on the upper right corner. The paper really is white!
I went to a family birthday party yesterday. Not only did I have fun drinking margaritas and playing on the karaoke machine, I was able to get another image for the straw hat series! I like those kind of working parties! I seem to have a lot of images lined up for this series. I never knew how many personalities a straw hat can have! But with each new learning hat experience I have, I plan on sharing it with you through paint! So, hold onto your hat!
Hey, this is the last week to be able to vote for my Zebra's new day oil painting on the BoldBrush competition, through facebook! I seem to be the #1 painting right now, but I still need votes to stay there. If you like the Zebra painting, I would love it if you would go and vote for it, for People's Choice. It's real easy, follow this link and click on the 'like' button next to the painting when you get there. It's that easy! http://canvoo.com/boldbrush/painting/11072

Sly peep Watercolor Progress by Debbie Flood
This is the Sly peep watercolor painting I am working on, along beside the Shy watercolor painting that I showed you the other day. The Sly peep image was taken on a very hot day! It is that hot day that I want to show in this painting and I think it is glowing heat pretty good so far.
I'm really enjoying the straw hat series, and I hope that you are too.
I do have a bit of the blurry eyes though! Working on two of them at the same time sure can create 'weaved' eye sight!
I hope your week has been going well!
Speak to you again soon,
Debbie

Shy Watercolor Progress Straw Hat Series
Hi, and happy Tuesday! I have titled this watercolor painting Shy. It is coming along pretty good. I was able to get a lot done on it today. After doing 'Contented', the watercolor of my father in his straw hat, and the fact that I had today's image going, I thought I would start a Straw Hat series! So this is the second painting in the series. Sunday I went to the Belfast, Maine horse show and found so many people with straw hats! I've also started another straw hat painting titled 'Sly peep'. That can be seen on my website 'In Progress' page here: http://www.debfloodart.com/debbie_flood_015.htm
Saturday I was at the Waterville, Maine downtown sidewalk art festival with my booth. The weather was great, though a bit hot, we all made it through! I'm very pleased to announce that my watercolor painting "Grumpy draft" received 3rd place in the watercolor division of the art show judged competition! Very happy about that. You can see the painting here: http://www.debfloodart.com/grumpy%20draft%20medium%20web%20view.jpg
I have two more hat images to work into paintings and another in the pc, waiting for me to work with composition and cropping. Actually, I need to work from two images for that one, so it will take a little longer to get that worked up the way I want it. It does involve a Friesian horse and an elegant straw hat!
Have a great evening,
Debbie

Another Straw Hat Watercolor Painting in Progress by Debbie Flood
Hello, here is the start of a new watercolor painting. This includes that same 'Straw hat' that was in my father's portrait. This painting is 13 x 15.
My youngest son modeled for this. He was playing around with his grandfather's hat and I just new I needed reference photos!
His shirt & pants were black, with a black American Flag on his chest. I have decided to add a little color to that flag. It's still dark but seems to work nicely with a bit of red.
Today I just laid in low-key colors as I searched and found the shapes and forms of the anatomy and chair. I also laid out the sunlight direction. This painting is going to be a nice complimentary piece to my father's portrait.
Tomorrow, I have to get the dust paper on a couple paintings. No I haven't gotten to that yet! But I have to pack up the art and booth for Saturday's Waterville art fest. Rain date is July 18. I hope it doesn't rain, as I would like to get to the Belfast, Maine Horse show Sunday. But, I'll take what I get. No sense worrying about it...doesn't seem to change things!
I'm still collecting People's choice votes on the BoldBrush online Competition for my "Zebra's new day" oil painting. I can't believe I have over 200 votes already! Thank you, thank you, if you have voted already. If you have friends on facebook, I would love it if you would share the link with them. Voting can only work through a facebook account and you can only vote once. http://canvoo.com/boldbrush/painting/11072 Thanks!
Of course, if you don't care for the painting, you don't have to vote. I just appreciate you looking.
Have a great rest of your day!

"Contented" Watercolor portrait of my Dad, and an eventful art festival!
"Contented" 13 x 14 Watercolor. I got to work on this painting of my father today. It's been too many days since I have picked up the brush! I'm not used to that!
The last few days sure has been a flurry of excitement and scary all wrapped up into one!
First, this past weekend was the Arts in the Park in Belfast, Maine. A two day festival, usually my best show out of all of them....had stormy weather. Saturday found us watching dark low full clouds head towards us on the Ocean front. It dumped a few down pours on us, but nothing we couldn't handle. Once the rain let up to a slow sprinkle, the crowds returned.
Sunday was the death sentence hammered down upon us! It rained hard off and on throughout the day. But by the time 3pm rolled around on the ticking clock...all heck broke loose. The heavens dumped on us and being stationed at the bottom of a very steep hill next to the ocean, well...there was only one way all that water was going to gush...down hill towards the ocean! And it showed no mercy for anyone in it's path.
I hurried to pack the art, and poke at the tent top with a shovel handle to push the pooled water off my roof. I feared of a collapsed tent, but it held on! I laid a tarp on a high place of grass in my tent and lined the cardboard boxes up and started sliding the framed works into them. Next thing I knew, when I turned around, the water was gushing over the tarp and all around the base of my boxes, and around my ankles!. I quickly moved them to my 6 foot table! but oh, the water ran out of the bottom of them. I feared for the art the whole time. Once everything was up on the table, I had to walk up that rushing hill of water to the parking lot where my van was hanging on for dear life! The man hole covers danced to their own music as the water gushed up out of the holes, forcing them to float and clang. I had to drive into the park at a further away entrance and between me and my tent was several large murky ponds that had to be crossed and zig zag around other tents that were desperately pleading to be folded up and packed away! Every fiber of my being was telling me not to drive through those ponds, but I had to. I had to rescue my art! I made it. whew! I piled the tent and art the best I could and all of my soggy contents, into the van, while my toes squished in my sneakers and my clothes stuck to me like a surgical glove! I climbed into the van...only to cross those ponds again and try to get up over a steep knoll where cars & trucks before me had created mud holes that a pig would be proud to own! I found an area that wasn't churned up by rubber tires and got my van up there and out of there!
Before I could head home, I had to go to the boat house and pick up my paintings from the Penobscot Bay Carvers & Artists 'Maine Coast Competition' that was going on the same weekend. There I found that my watercolor "American Kestrel" (pictured above) had won First Place, Best of Show, and People's Choice Awards! Wow!
And the oil painting "Zebra's new day" picked up a Second. The watercolor "Sun soakers, Harbor Seals" took a Second also! That was a very happy surprise from all the drama that played out earlier.
But, Still, I worried about what was happening to my art in the van in those wet boxes! I drove home as quickly as I could without hydroplaning!
When I got them out of the boxes, only a couple paintings needed the dust cover paper replaced on the backs of the frames! Everything survived, except for a few cardboard boxes that got dragged off to the pile of wet doom. I came into the house and peeled my shoes off and ringed my socks out in the sink!
Monday I spent the whole day drying out the tent and van and everything else in between. What a mess! But it is all dry now.
Monday afternoon my parents stopped in to let me know they had donated a painting I had done of my dad and other 'Tally-Ho" riders to the Morrill Maine Historical Society Museum! I grew up in the town of Morrill, spent about 27 years there and only live a couple miles away now. My dad spent a lot of his childhood in Morrill, growing up also, and a lot of ancestors lived there and in surrounding towns. The painting is a watercolor and depicts the Tally-Ho riders out for a ride on horseback, trotting up the dirt road towards the viewer. I'm so pleased they donated it. The presentation took place last night. So now I can say that I am in a Museum Collection! And one that is near and dear to my heart.
This coming Saturday, July, 17th, I'll have my booth at the Waterville, Maine Sidewalk art festival. I'm hoping for a lot less eventful weather prediction, but it's not looking to good so far! ha ha. We shall see. Rain date is Sunday the 18th. And I have purchased large lawn garbage bags to cover each work of art with!
Have a great evening!

A weekly update, "Golden draft" and "Zebra's new day" oil paintings and the Arts in the Park, Belfast, Maine
Hello! I thought I would send out a weekly update. I took a new photo of my latest oil painting, "Golden draft" 14 x 18 oil on canvas. This painting is now dry enough to get a good photo. Inquiries about this painting may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com
I've been doing nothing but framing and packing works for the Arts in the Park, Belfast Maine, on the waterfront July 10 & 11th. http://www.artsintheparkbelfast.org I'll have my booth there with loads of work!
It's been a fury and frenzy of last minute framing of some of the latest watercolors and finding others and putting them into clear bags, pricing and tagging and packing.
My husband is also on vacation this week and we spent an awesome day Monday at Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine. We dumped ourselves (with the kids) on the beach and then had a nice picnic and some sight seeing. On the way back we stopped at the big chicken barn full of used books and treasures! I found a wonderful book in a slip cover of Winslow Homer's work and life. Got that for a grand total of $7.00! Then I found a Mary Cassatt book, with works from an exhibit she'd had (women & children paintings), for $5.00! What a find! If you read my facebook status, you saw different prices posted that I paid. I had written it down wrong, as I had put back a book of Frederick Remington that had been $15.00. Oh well. It was all cheap!
I have my "Zebra's new day" oil painting entered into a July Art competition, online and I am still collecting People's Choice Votes. I keep tying and going back and forth with another painting for 1st & 2nd place. I would love to have your votes if you have an account on facebook. Follow this link and click on the "like" button next to the painting http://canvoo.com/boldbrush/painting/11072 If you have already voted, you can copy and paste this link for your friends and family that are on facebook too. Thank you!
Also this weekend July 10& 11th is the Penobscot Bay Carvers & Artists Maine Coast competition at the Boat house downtown Belfast, Maine. I'll be entering three of my works into this show also. They have some outstanding carvings, paintings and photography there! You can find out more about this exhibit at http://www.duck-trap.com/pbcaa/html
Tomorrow, Friday, I'll be setting up my tent for the arts in the park, and I'll be entering the PBCAA competition. I hope you are close enough to come see me in my booth this weekend! Lots of new works and Giclee prints available!
Have a great weekend!!

Packing for the art booth shows
Happy Friday to you all!! Today for me, was another day of packing up art. By the looks of things, I had a very productive winter! This photo shows the entrance to my studio. Boxes leaning against the door and a couple more around the corner out of sight. And in the background of this photo is the three plastic totes, piled on top of each other, filled with framed and non-framed art.
Next week my husband is on vacation and Arts in the park is fast approaching for the next weekend. Who knows what I'll get done for any original painting.
I hope you all have a safe and happy weekend and long Holiday! I'll catch up with you real soon!
In the meantime, I am still collecting people choice votes on my Zebra painting, an online art exhibit at Boldbrush! Follow this link and click on the "Like" button to cast your vote. Thanks!!! http://canvoo.com/boldbrush/painting/11072
Be safe!

Prints are ready and an art competition online
Finally, I have the prints all signed, numbered and packaged, ready for the up coming art booth shows. Getting ready for this months & next months shows are taking time away from painting for now. That's ok, because I enjoy the art festivals. I get to see my collectors again and meet new ones! I'll have plenty of painting time when the shows die down.
I entered an online art competition. Each month they have a new competition. So I entered today, "Zebra's new day" 11 x 14 oil painting. The organizers have this online event linked with Facebook. Click on through the link I have provided here, and then click on the facebook "Like" button next to my painting. That will count as a People's choice vote. http://canvoo.com/boldbrush/painting/11072 This voting by the public is open for the whole month of July. I'm already in the lead for the vote, but I still have a whole month to go and a lot more paintings will be entered throughout the month from other artists.Last months competition had about 600 art entrants! I hope after you vote, you share this link with your family and friends and ask them to cast their vote for July's People choice. Thank you! & if you are one of the many who have already voted for my painting, I thank you!!!!! I so appreciate everyone's support for my art!
If for some unforeseen reason, I don't get a post out tomorrow (Friday)...please have a very safe and happy 4th!! We're planning a family get together Bar-B-Que! Then on the 5th...we plan to hang out on a beach! Can't wait!!!! And yes, I'll be taking my camera! Gotta get some candid shots!
Enjoy!
Debbie
