Progress on my Father's Portrait in Watercolor

Hi, I hope your Tuesday is going well. I didn't send out a post yesterday (Monday) because I spent the day in the studio, cutting mats, framing, labeling, pricing, and packaging art! I have two weeks or less, to be ready for the "Arts in the park" two day festival here in Belfast, Maine. Wow, do I have a lot of art! I do hope you can stop by and visit and view the originals, face to face on July 10th or 11th. I think you'll be surprised how a computer screen just doesn't do a painting justice!
That same weekend is the "Penobscot Bay Carvers & Artist's Assoc., Maine Coast Competition". I plan on having a couple wildlife paintings in this exhibit also. It's held at the boat house in Belfast, Maine.
After Arts in the Park in Belfast, I journey up to Waterville, Maine for their outside, downtown Art festival on the sidewalks, July 17th.
Then I get a small break and I am then down to Lincolnville Beach, for "Art at the beach" the second Saturday in August.

Today I worked on this watercolor of my father. I decided to put a blue wash in the background and I like it a lot. I also applied shadows to the shirt, hat, face, and hand/arm. This painting has gotten the seal of approval from my mom. My dad..well, I see a smile when he takes a glimpse at it.

Tomorrow will probably be another day devoted to framing and packing more art. Time to gather my booth supplies too, such as all the tools I'll need to keep the set up/break down running smoothly as well as all the tools for easy sales transactions and paperwork. There's a lot of work to keeping this circus on the road! ha ha.

Speak with you again soon,

Watercolor Progress of my father

Good Friday to you! I'm still having a ball working on this watercolor of my dad. That straw hat is just the best! The texture, the colors, the beads!
Today I spent time working on the shirt, the hat, the eye glass case that clips to his shirt pocket. I also put a little more wash on his face and put in a few details on the back of the chair. That chair back is a small hand knit piece of cloth draped over the back. It's made from real dog hair! I swapped a painting for it a long time ago at an Art exhibit. Kind of a cool piece! It matches that hat real well.

Today my Giclee prints arrived of the "Windsor Hotel", "Best seat in the house", "American honey", and "Grumpy draft". They are absolutely gorgeous! They are printed on Arches velvet watercolor paper and look like original paintings! They are amazing! The Windsor Hotel are 11 x 19 with an inch white border. This comes in a limited edition of 50. The other three prints are available as Limited editions or smaller open editions. You can email me for more info about them and to purchase debflood@debfloodart.com thank you! I have sizes and prices on my website of the western-equine Giclee prints http://www.debfloodart.com/debbie_flood_016.htm

I hope you have a great weekend! Looks like I'll be numbering and signing prints!

Talk to you next week, if not before!

"My father" Watercolor in Progress

Hi,
Yesterday I spent the day finishing cleaning up the studio. Finally I got things where they belong, and out of the way! I have room to work on oils on canvas and to work on watercolors. I can now have several mediums and works in progress at the same time now, and not have to move anything or put the mediums away. This makes my studio world so much better! I also was able to get a painting framed! Now that I can see and use my framing table!
Today I started this watercolor of my father. He has this straw hat, with beads. My parents were here for supper the other evening and my son found grampa's hat! When he set it on my father...I just had to get a reference photo! This watercolor is almost square, 13 x 14 inches.
I also got some reference shots of my son in that straw hat too! Who knows where I'll go with these "straw hat" paintings!

Have a great Thursday and I'll speak to you again soon.

Progress on the Child Cowboy Oil Painting

Happy Tuesday! Here is an update on the little cowboy oil painting, 11 x 14. The light radiating in this painting is really incredible! To think I have done this! Look at his scarf, where it hangs in front of his shirt. I've been able to create space under the scarf! Yes, I'm impressed with myself..ha ha.
This is the only way I can learn at my best,...by painting every day, or as close to it as I can!

Not a lot going on today. We are having a new heating system installed today, so most of the day there has been service men here, in and out and up and down the cellar. Not a lot I can do in the studio with that going on, so I have been updating my portfolio for the upcoming outside booth shows next month. I've been doing a lot of printing! But, I'm glad to have most of that "secretarial" stuff done.

Enjoy the rest of you Tuesday and I'll talk with you again real soon.

Progress on Cowboy, child in oil on canvas.

I've been working on this oil painting for a few days now. 11 x 14 on canvas. I'm loving the colors I've got going on in this painting! Blues & yellows, orange & reds. It's starting to 'pop' in some areas.

Today is a hot one! I love it though, and have really worked hard to get into the studio and stay in the studio! I have a lot of work to do, before the July art festivals start up!
This coming Sunday, there is a horse show, and I am excited to get there and see what I can get for new reference photos to paint from! I also hope to get some fun photos to post on my facebook photography page! & yes, I can't wait to see my friends, people & horses, after a long winter!

Monday, I'll be going to the printers to check over the proofs for Giclee prints of 4 of my paintings. "The grumpy draft", "The Windsor hotel", "Best seat in the house", "American honey". Limited Edition #1 of the Windsor Hotel is spoken for. If you would like a limited edition print of any of these titles, please let me know and they'll be printed with this first batch. Thank you! debflood@debfloodart.com

Have a super weekend!! And stay cool!! (Or warm if you happen to be in the "Winter" Countries),

"Fetchin' Water" Oil on canvas, exploring the Child a Day project.

My yearly project of painting a child a day is over, but I am still exploring the world of painting children. Right now I am exploring some of the Child a day watercolors, with my oils on canvas.
I'm focusing mostly on the children with horses or horse related activities, and activities with other animals. Because they are oils, slow drying, these paintings aren't completed in a day, but I don't waste too much time on them either.
This is my first oil in my series of the children in oils.

"Fetchin' water" 11 x 14 Canvas $1,600.00

And here is the painting that was first created in Watercolors: "Fetching the water" 5 x 7 $100.00

Inquiries to purchase either painting may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.
I hope you enjoy these Oils on canvas, as much as you did the child a day in watercolors.

"Fetching water" Work in oil in progress

Good Monday! I had planned to go out 'Plein aire' painting today and meet some artists there. Looming rain in the forecast and family obligations kept that from happening. But I did manage to go into the studio today! This is an 11 x 14 canvas in oil paint. Last week I toned this canvas with burnt umber and Alizarin Crimson, giving it a brick red look to it. Today it was dry and I transferred the image and started blocking in the paint. This is where I have left off with it this afternoon.
I limited my palette. Different hues of yellows, reds, Ultramarine blue and Burnt umber. I didn't use any white until the very end of the painting session with a little bit to tint some yellows for hair highlights, & clothes highlights.
I had painted this scene in watercolor a while ago in the "Child a day" project. I'm enjoying painting it in oil much better. I think I will be doing a few more children paintings in oil.

Over the weekend, I was uploading photos of my garden to my facebook public page. I have a lot and the members there really seemed to like what I was posting. So because of this, I created a Debbie Flood Photography public page. I'll be posting all kinds of photos on there, from my travels to the horse shows, to my garden. I have a good amount on there already. You can go and "Like" my page by following the link here:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Debbie-Flood-Photography/134720349873837?v=photos&ref=mf#!/pages/Debbie-Flood-Photography/134720349873837

I hope you've had a decent Monday and hopefully, I'll see you on my photography page on facebook!

More work on the Oil painting of the Draft horse

Today I realized that I needed to get rid of the gold hole that was in the background above the horse's neck. I like it a lot better now (Top image). Our eyes focus on the horse now, not that gold spot in the background.

I worked on cleaning up the studio a little more. Boy, it sure has become a "dumping ground". Everything that is in there, belongs in there, but I dumped it wherever I happened to be standing at the moment. I'm also getting works ready & packed for July's booth shows. I have a lot of the 'Child a day' paintings left that will be going into the booth. You can look on the Child a day Blog, and see if there is anything there that you would like to have before they go into the booth: http://www.paintingachildaday.com
Most all of the child a day's have been raised in price and some have been matted and framed. Those painting's specs haven't been entered into the Blog. Email me for a price quote and whether it is framed or not. debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

Have a great weekend!

Progress on the Red Toned Canvas, OIl painting Draft Horse

My red toned canvas was dry today! It was so fun and nice to be working in the oil paint again. I'm not sure why I ever put them away. I think the 'Child a day' project in watercolor had a little something to do with that.  This canvas is 14 x 18 inches. The dark background is a mix of dark blues and reds, colors that just don't get picked up by the camera. Well, my camera anyways! The foreground shadows are the same colors.
I don't have a lot more to do on this. I'll be waiting for it to dry a bit, and then I'll be punching it up with some highlights and some details on the face of the horse.
You probably noticed that it is the same horse as the latest watercolor I was working on. I really wanted to try him in oils. I'm glad I have.

Have a great Thursday,
Debbie

Oil toned canvas & Plein aire possibilities

Today I toned a 14 x 18 canvas with oil paint. First I laid on burnt umber, which is a dark brown. I rubbed it into the canvas with a cloth to thin it out. Over that I laid on Alizarin Crimson, a dark red that is some what transparent. I took a clean cloth and rubbed that into the Umber. Now I wait for it to dry.
I have an idea for this canvas, but I'm not going to tell you, I'm going to wait and let you watch it unfold. The paint really doesn't have all those wavy lines in it (that are showing in the photo). I guess my camera wanted to get creative too.

So, I couldn't paint on the toned canvas until it is dry, I dug out my plein aire French easel. I have a new artist friend on facebook and she is giving me a bit of a push to go out and paint with her and a group of Plien aire artists. It really sounds fun. Get out of the studio, meet some new artists/friends and share a painting day. Hopefully I will come away with some decent paintings of the Maine landscape too! I'm going to take my watercolors. I've tried oils outside before and I didn't like the mess it caused. Carrying those oil soaked brushes, turpentine, rags, and then finding a place for a palette full of wet oil paint to be, on it's journey home. I think I can handle the watercolor much nicer. Maybe if I get some decent watercolor sketches, I can turn them into oil paintings in the studio. Plus I'll take my camera for candid shots!

Hope your Wednesday is going great!
Debbie

Progress on the "Grazed by a draft" Watercolor painting

Here is the progress on the "Grazed by a Draft" watercolor painting. Today I worked on the blowing mane and forelock. I also worked on the dark areas of the grass and layed in washes of orange and reds over the brighter grass.
He's looking rather nice! (In my opinion) lol.
Have a fantastic day!

The latest I have created is a 2011 calendar with a different painting on each month! Lot's of child a day paintings and horse art. It is a calendar of my Equine Watercolors.
Those items make great gifts too.

Talk again soon,
Debbie
