Watercolor of Girls with horse, in progress

Here is the new watercolor I started a couple days ago. The image was loaned to me by a friend on facebook, Darren Shaw of the Rockin' 4 Ranch.
This watercolor painting is 9 x 10...or somewhere in that area. I've included a cropped image so you can see the detail in the young lady's face. That is where I have been putting most of my detail and work at the moment, and her arm that is on the face of the horse.
Lets hope I don't ruin this one!

I think this weather is bothering my internet dish. I've had off and on internet today.
Tomorrow morning, I'll be delivering two paintings to the Sportsman show, art show, in Augusta, Maine. Then in the evening I'll be going to the opening reception of Maine's Open Juried Art Show in Waterville, Maine. 6-8pm on the 3rd floor of the Opera house.

I'm not sure if I'll get a post out tomorrow here or not. We'll see how my internet dish and my time do for me!

Have a great creative day!

'Ranch hands' Watercolor finished.

"Ranch hands" 10 x 10 Watercolor $800.00 inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you. Stacey Huston from 'A focus in the wild' photography submitted the image to be painted. Thank you Stacey!
Yay, I finished this one. I think it's finished. I'll let it sit for awhile and see how it seems later after a few days. I studied the human flesh on some of the Master's paintings at the Colby Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine last weekend and I was able to 'see' the colors used in the shadows of the flesh. Wow, I applied it here to the hand under the puppy's chin and in a few other low areas in the hand and it seemed to be just what that hand needed. I really need to get out of the studio more often and go to the Museums!

I was able to load the page last night and today, to jury the equine art show from Ohio. That's a fun and interesting process. I've sent my thoughts, and they will be compared with the other 2 jurors and that of the final judge and then adjustments will be made if needed. I'm looking forward to see how close my thoughts are to those of the other two jurors! This is a great learning tool! I'm soaking it in...like a sponge!

I've got another watercolor started and I'll share that one with you tomorrow. Today's painting and tomorrows will be going in my new coffee table book, "The Equine Art of Debbie Flood, A brush with emotions, spirits, & bonds of horses and man".

Thank you for following along. Please share these emails and images with your family and friends.
Talk with you tomorrow,
Debbie

"Ranch hands" watercolor progress

Here is my progress so far on 'Ranch hands', watercolor. I mostly worked on layering colors over the background and I worked on the puppy a bit. I think the last day I worked on this was Friday. Today has been an interesting day that has been eating time. I'm sure you all can relate to days like that! So I haven't made it into the studio.

I've discovered a few more high profile Juried Art Exhibits to gather info about and prepare paperwork to submit for next year. Most of these shows are a year ahead, so that means I'm just getting things together before the deadlines arrive for the 2011 exhibits. Most of those deadlines are in May of this year.
I'm also hoping that by the end of April or sometime in May, I'll have news to share about the Invitational Sedona, Arizona Group Gallery Exhibit 2011.

News from this weekend! Saturday I entered the Waterville Area Art Society's 20th Annual Maine Open Juried Art Show in Waterville, Maine. There was a large turnout of artists, from what I could see and each of us carrying at least two works of art. I entered 'Apple butter', watercolor and 'Zebra's new day' Oil. I'm proud to say that 'Apple butter' got in! I'm including an image here to jog your memory as to which painting I am talking about.

The exhibit runs from march 29th to April 10th, 2010 at the Opera house/The Center/dance studio on the 3rd floor. An open reception and award presentation takes place on Thursday, April 1, from 6-8pm. It is located on Main Street in Waterville. You can find it here http://www.watervillemainstreet.org
Also this Thursday morning I'll be taking two wildlife paintings to the Augusta Maine Sportsman Show Art Show. I'm not sure how everything seems to fall on the same day...but that is going to be one busy day, as I plan on going to the opening reception in Waterville that evening.
I'm also suppose to be jurying an Equine Art Exhibit right now. Needs to be done by the end of this week. So, wouldn't you know, I can't load the page online that has all the entries. It has been one of those days today! I guess it's Monday, for sure.

I hope you had a great weekend.....did you happen to see any Dragons in your travels???? If so, My boy & I know how to train them! Pretty close to training your horse...or dog! Loved the movie!
talk to you tomorrow,
Debbie

"Memories shared" Watercolor finished.

"Memories shared" 9 x 10 Watercolor, $800.00. Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.
I finished this one up today. I really like it a lot. The emotions and thoughts that are shown through the man's hand, the lighting, colors, composition and the 'painterly' quality to it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Tomorrow I'll be delivering two paintings to the Maine Open Juried Art Show in Waterville, Maine. I have to check back later in the afternoon, with them, to see if I have to bring them home, or have them stay for the exhibit. So that means I have to spend the day in the City. I have plenty of things to keep me busy with all the errands I have to do there.
Sunday I promised my young son I would take him to see "How to train your dragon" movie! I can't wait to see that. I shall have just as much fun as my 9 yr old! I love the animation of movies like this, and the stories and the colors. I think it is part of being an artist and the love of children's books. So it will be a nice time, just him and I pigging out on popcorn and soda and learning how to train our dragon, if one ever decides to come into our lives! I can't convince my husband or my teen son that this movie will be fun... what's up with that??? ha ha.
I hope you have a fun and relaxing weekend, and I'll catch up with you on Monday.

'Ranch hands' Watercolor in progress

'Ranch hands' a watercolor in progress. I started this painting a few days ago. The photo to use as reference was sent to me by Stacey Huston of http://www.staceyhuston.com/ 'A focus in the wild' Photographer. We met on Twitter, became friends on facebook and she has sent a few images to me, to work from. I had a contest on my Facebook fan page and she won a Graphite portrait of her horse. She sent me a wonderful image of her husband on his horse. And now she wanted to give me an image to paint from to include in my new coffee table book I am working on. I've cropped her original photo into a square image and the lighting and coloring in the background will be different. This image includes her dog 'Digger' as a puppy, their horse 'Tiger' and Stacey's husband's hands.

'Memories shared' watercolor progress continues.

Here is more progress on 'Memories shared' watercolor. This painting is almost completed. I still need to do some work on the harness and a few other little details.

You haven't heard from me the last couple of days, because a part went on my internet dish. I haven't had any internet connection since Sunday morning. I did make it to the Library on Monday and post that info on my facebook fan page.
But in spite of all that happening, I have been painting and framing. I have two paintings ready to go to the Maine Open Juried Art Show in Waterville, Maine this coming weekend. And two more ready to go to the Augusta Sportsman Show, August, Maine Civic Center the first weekend of April.

I hope your week has been going well for you. I'll be back posting tomorrow, as long as my new dish parts keep on working.
Thank you for following along and please share with family and friends.

More progress on the watercolor of the man and draft horse

More work on this today. I spent most of the time working on the area around the whiskers and on the harness. These are areas that will take a bit of time. I have to take breaks from this part, as my eyes begin to get unfocused and go a bit blurry on me...ha ha.

I took a photo of the man's hand with a ruler over it, so that the size I am working with can be seen.

The weather here is just super and I plan on being outside Saturday, hoping to get some yard work done. The day is suppose to get in the mid 60's. Today is the low 60's.
Have a great weekend!
Talk with you next week,
Debbie

More progress on "Memories shared" Draft horse and man watercolor

And it continues! I had a lot more time today to work on this. It was a much more quieter day than the last few days have been.
I also burned a CD for an upcoming exhibit entry deadline and filled out the paper work that always goes with these types of things. That is ready for the mail, and it's nice to have that completed.
Tomorrow, my boys have the day off from school. I have to step out in the morning for teacher conference, but will be back late morning to get back to any inquiries.
I hope your Thursday is going well,
and I'll talk with you tomorrow,
Debbie

Memories shared, watercolor of draft horse and man in progress

It sure was hard to not play hooky today from the studio, with temps in the mid 60's and the sun out bright. I got this image transferred to the watercolor board and started applying paint. When it was close to the time to be done in the studio, I did skip outside with the dog and we grabbed some of that great Spring sun!

I think I will title this painting "Memories shared".

I hope you got to visit the Stable Woman Gazette to see my painting on their online cover! http://www.stablewomangazette.com

This bit of info came across my desk and I went and voted. I'm hoping you will find it worth while to vote too. Pepsi gives out grants that the public votes on, if they think it is a good idea to be funded. There is a farm in Maine, the Springy Pond Farm and they want to start up a therapeutic riding program for children. They are in the running to get $250K !!! Visit the Pepsi website http://www.refresheverything.com search for 'Springy Pond Farm' in the sites search box, or find it in the Education tab and vote! You'll have to sign up/register on the site, but it is all free and not very hard. There are many other great ideas on there looking for votes too. You just may find something else too that you would like to help. I noticed a lot of animal and horse things that need funding.

I would like to extend some 'thank you's' to those of you who have submitted photos for me to paint from for my new book! Some great stuff out there!!
Have a great day,
Debbie

'Memories shared' preliminary sketch

Not sure how well you can see this sketch, but this is what I started today.

Today has been a bit, well, time spent on the pc. It couldn't be helped. But, I did get this sketch onto a tracing paper. I like to use the tracing paper to make any adjustments to the drawing. I can lay other drawings over it or under it and see the images on the other side, to see if they all work together. The pencil also erases easily off too. The size here is roughly 10 x 11. the sides were cut off from my scanner.

I think I will be calling this one "Memories shared". I want to convey that feeling I saw when this elderly man was watching the teams pull at the fair. I've had this image since 2006 and I am finally feeling like I am at a place with my art to paint this the way it should be painted. Sometimes, my images need to sit and wait.

I'm very excited about an online magazine cover I have a painting on! The Stable Woman Gazette just put my painting "Winter's shelter" on their cover today! Take a peek when you get time: http://www.stablewomangazette.com/

My internet has been running slow, as HughesNet decided we used too much bandwidth yesterday. So I haven't been able to see the cover of that magazine yet. The page won't load. I'm hoping that the internet provider will ease up soon!

I hope your Tuesday has gone great for you and I hope to talk with you tomorrow,

Debbie

"Passionate kisses" Watercolor of girl and Palomino horse

"Passionate kisses" 10 x 10 square Watercolor. $800.00 Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

This is the image that was submitted to me from a follower on Twitter and Facebook. The photo she submitted actually had almost the whole girl in there and a lot of the horse and a grain silo in the background. I cropped the image, brought it in for an intimate feel and created more greenery in the background. The girl also had a pink shirt. I take liberty in changing a lot of things to make a good composition and use of colors for the emotions and feelings that I want to get across and where I want your eye to go. I don't just 'copy' photos. I use them as guidance in the journey of creating a painting.
If you have some photos of people with horses, even if your backgrounds are horrible with trash cans or other eye sores, and would like a work of art created from them, send them on to me, and I'll see what I can do with them. I would love to create a painting that would be cherished by you and your family for years to come.

This painting will be included in my new Coffee Table book also. "The Equine Art of Debbie Flood", A brush with emotions, spirits, & bonds of horses and man'.
I hope your Monday is going great,
Debbie

'Back in the saddle' Western Watercolor

This watercolor painting "Back in the saddle" is finished. 15 x 12 $1,200.00 inquiries about this painting or others may be directed to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

Cowboys out on the trail, up in the high country. They stopped for a break and a bite to eat, and now must get back in the saddle and move out before it gets too late in the day. One rides a Paint, the other an Appaloosa and the other, who is in places unknown, rides a Buckskin.

'Best seat in the house' Western Watercolor in Progress

Last week, Friday to be specific, I started another watercolor. This one is "Best seat in the house". I have a few updates in progress here.
This painting is in the area of 14 x 15. I'm not sure on that size. I will have to measure it again.
This image depicts a Cowgirl atop an Appaloosa Horse, looking out over the vast valley that lay before her. The sun is starting to set behind her, which offers a wonderful glow upon her and her horse.

I had a fun surprise the other day. I learned that this Blog is ranked on Facebook as being in the Top 50 Artist Networked Blogs! This Blog is number 38 in the list! Take a look on Facebook

Pretty cool!

Western themed Watercolor in progress

I've been working on this Western themed Watercolor since last weekend. I have three installments here of the progress so far. The image size is 15 x 12 inches. The image above is where I left off today, the third installment. I worked mostly on the clouds and the rocks in the foreground. I also added in a little color to the man on the far left.

This is the second installment of working on this painting. I worked up the rocks and dirt, and horses.I also worked on the man in the center of the painting.
This is the first installment. I started with getting the sky and clouds placed and the base colors. Then I worked on getting the colors adjusted on the horses and the ground and the clothing on the man in the middle. This is all base, underpainting.

'American honey' Western Cowgirl Watercolor finished

"American honey" 12 x 13 Watercolor $1,200.00 Inquiries may come to my email at debflood@debfloodart.com thank you.

Happy March! It's typical March weather here. Heavy winds, rain, snow, rain, but it still has a Spring feel to it.
I finished 'American honey'. This painting will be saved out for Western Exhibit venues. I'm getting very anxious for the Sedona 2011 Gallery exhibit. A few more artists have been added to the roster. Some really, really nice stuff! I'm so honored to be invited to participate in this exhibit.
I've started another Western scene watercolor. I've posted the start of that on my facebook fan page.

Have a great creative day!
Debbie
